It's kind of a shame that Soriano (48 now) will probably pass Biggio (53) for 2nd all-time in leadoff HR because managers keep foolishly hitting him there. Then again, I guess Bidge will continue to have the NL-only record for a while.

Astros go down 1-2-3 in the first.
    Bourn lined out to CF.
    Wigginton K'd swinging.
    Tejada popped out to 1B.

Bottom 1st:

Soriano leadoff HR.  Astros 0, Cubs 1
Fontentot pops up to Tejada.
Lee singles to CF.

That should get you caught up

Always good to check gameday and see that Backe is throwing outside slider after outside slider.

Pretty much the exact manuver he pulls every time he ends up getting lit up.

That lolipop he threw to Soriano was sitting there in the happy zone saying "hit me!"   He hasn't hit a target yet.

It's perfect if you want to walk a ton and then eventually come back to the plate with a desperation fastball.  The good thing about Soriano's lead-off homer was that it was a lead-off homer.  Nobody else on base.

Any preferences on the PBP?  Want pitch by pitch, one post per batter or just a half-inning summary?

Pence hits Zambrano (on the foot) with the ball, and it rolls past Fontenot. Blum advances to 3rd, Pence hustles and slides safely into 2nd.

Zambrano grounds into a spectacular 6-4-3 DP.  Tejada dives, flips (from his knees) to Newhan who makes a low throw that Berkman stretches and digs out in time to get Zamfuckinbrano.

Like when the ball goes right through the hole in Soriano's glove?

Tejada slams a liner to CF that hits a running Soriano in the glove and bounces off, ruled a double.

Tejada at 2nd. No outs.

Twinkie pops out to SS on the pitch after Zambrano steps off to readjust the boys.  Lance--gotta lay off that one.

what about C) slap Michael Barrett around?

Help me out here if y'all would:

Barrett got into it with Zambrano (points for Barrett),
Barrett punched A.J. Pierzynski in the head (mega points for Barrett),
Barrett is no longer a scrub (points for Barrett).

Why is it that he is hated again?

Lance looked bad there. Just because the ump made a bad call for strike 2, doesn't mean you have to swing at anything.

Oswalt confrontation

"Barrett was involved in two incidents with Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt during the 2004 season. On August 22, 2004, Oswalt struck Barrett.[18] Barrett, believing the pitch was in relation to a three-run home run that Aramis Ramírez had previously hit, confronted Oswalt, and prompted both teams to take the field. Oswalt was ejected from the game, as the Astros went on to lose, eleven to six.[40][41] Five days later, during another Cubs-Astros game, Barrett mouthed off to Oswalt and attempted to confront him.[18] The game’s umpires restrained the two before a fight could break out, but not before both benches cleared out.[41] Oswalt remained in the game, and defeated the Cubs 15-7.[42] In a post-game press conference, Barrett condemned Oswalt's actions, and stated, "We're going to see him again."[41]"

In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

Nieve faces DeRosa with men on 1st and 3rd, 1 out.

DeRosa grounds into a 6-4-3 on the second pitch.  Nice.

Your scoring system is all wrong.  Only the second point is correct.

Barrett sucks cock by choice, ordered a hit on Oswalt, and was unprofessional enough to stalk Roy down the first base line as he calmly took his base.

Howry RHP (6-4, 5.06) comes in to pitch for Zambrano (5.0 IP, 5H, 3R, 3BB, 3K)

Pence hits a high one that almost goes out, Edmonds jumps and the ball hits in the ivy--but TWO balls come out of the ivy.  Edmonds grabs a ball and throws it in.  After further review, he got the right ball.  Funny play, though.

Pence gets a TRIPLE.

Bourn up with the bases loaded, no outs.
Bourn singles up the middle with the infield in (looked like Howry tipped it with his glove), scoring Newhan and Quintero.

not a bad job by sampson.  not a bad job at all.

How many inherited runners has he allowed to score this year (something like 2 of ____)?

Blum gets out somehow.  Was helping a kid with homework.  Gameday says he grounded out to Lee at 1B.

Weak bouncer straight to Lee.  Of course, this being the Cubs, Lee and Guzman nearly screwed up the simple put out.

Derrick Lee up with the bases juiced.  Blum is shaded toward SS, Lee hits a bullet to Blum who throws to Newhan who forwards to Plasticman Berkman for a DP to end the Cub's 8th.  What a play! Great scoop by Twinkie!

Brownie, JD, you gotta read Footer, from astros.com

In other injury news, right-handed reliever Geoff Geary hasn't pitched since Aug. 26, due to recurring pain near his right groin. As for a projected return date, Geary said simply, "hopefully, Colorado."

Realistically, however, Geary probably won't be cleared to pitch until the team returns home to host the Pirates on Monday. He may throw a bullpen session some time during the Rockies series, possibly Friday.

At the start of the inning, I figured "ok, they're gonna let Redass face the righties and bring in Wright for the 1st lefty..." head-scratcher.

Pence hits a ground ball right to Ramirez who muffs it, the ball continues down the LF line, but Pence runs through the bag and does not advance to 2nd.

Scored an error.

Valverde joins Wright warming up in the pen.

Wesley Wright in to pitch.  Castillo comes in for Newhan in the double switch.

Ramirez makes the crowd roar with a long foul on the first pitch, then walks on 4 straight balls.

Kerry Wood in to pitch for the fuckin' Cubs.

Quintero grounds one to Errormiss who flubs it and then throws high for his second error of the game.  One on, no outs.

Dreadful AB. He popped up the first bunt attempt so badly that it went OVER Lee's head.

Speaking of Wright, is there a reason he wears a My Little Pony backpack at games? Is it rookie hazing or is he not as old as advertised like a chinese gymnast?

WARNING, JdJO QUOTES AND LINK

Astros Notes (8/14/08): LINK

Rookie reliever Wesley Wright has been sporting a pink My Little Pony backpack since closer Jose Valverde delivered it to him at Minute Maid Park on Monday.

The lefthanded Wright, who is likely to be the Astros’ Rookie of the Year this season, packs the backpack with snacks and wears it on his way to the bullpen.

“I’ve been taking goodies out there,” he said. “I started with a bag and then a cooler. Now I have a backpack. At home, it’s been (packed with) Red Bulls and water. On the road, it’s been (filled) with Twinkies, Starbursts, Snickers and Skittles.”

The Astros scored a combined 15 runs over the first two days Wright wore the backpack, winning both games.

How many games in a row has Valverde pitched?

This is his 6th in a row (15, 13, 12, 18, 11 and ? pitches thrown).

Valverde pitching many days in a row means Astros lead late for many games in a row. But he will have to have a day off pretty soon. Maybe they blow out the Scrubs by 10 tomorrow.

Anyone catch the postgame show where FSN Houston interview Reggie Abercrombie and put up a Wesley Wright graphic underneath?  At least the interviewer didin't ask about his pitching.

Sheesh FSN.

I did love Hunter Pence's sextuple cliche answer though.  Straight out of Bull Durham.

That was about as exciting a roller coaster ride of a game as I can recall this season.  Wright?  What a clutch outing!  Bourn? Really starting to make his detractors eat crow.  Immaterial, I know, but a satisfying thought nevertheless, particularly for anyone who has to put up with bar room and/or water-cooler GMs around this town.  Blum?  Just a beautiful swing at the right time.

That is exactly what I was thinking!
