Taveras on Waivers
« on: August 26, 2008, 08:24:26 pm »
Quote
The Rockies have placed closer Brian Fuentes and center fielder Willy Taveras on waivers, and are expected to explore dealing them this week.

According to major league sources, Fuentes was placed on waivers Monday, and Taveras followed Tuesday. So Fuentes' waivers would expire Wednesday afternoon, with Taveras' waivers expiring a day later.

Why?

Bourn is a better centerfielder.

$cott Bora$$ might be another reason.

But someone told me Willy's stolen bases and higher batting average makes up for the difference.

I think Willy might be one of Scottie's loss leaders at the moment.

That assumes that Bora$$ gives him the time of day.

True, but Willy T could be a decent bench player with tons of speed.  Maybe next year.  I am not sure when he lost his shine, but I personally would not give up on him.  Lamb either for that matter.

Bench players are like Loretta, Erstad, and Blum.  Sit the bench for a week and come in and knock a solid single in late innings.  That's not Taveras.  He's not much of a defensive replacement either, left and right.  Don't need one in center.  Abercrombie does what he does in that role.  Lamb, maybe, but I prefer Blum.

Speaking of bench players...how about Bruntlett last night?  Huge two out double to bring home the tying run in the 9th.   I like that guy, wish he was still a good guy.

Do you think he will be as versatile as Bruntlett?  He was very good in defensive switch situations in the corner outfield spots.

Abercrombie adds ventilation, too.

Loretta looked a little tired-armed last night on a few throws from third.

Probably not, however, as the Astros are currently constructed, I'd rather see Loretta and Blum get playing time.

Whatever it takes to get to 90.

I guess I missed it, I didn't even realize Lamb had been DFA'ed.

But if the Wizard heeds that call, he'll end up stalled on 666 for a long time ... something eerie about that combination.

Yep, that's what would be implied by what I said.  Insert smiley face.

Edit: got past 666, no worries.

Stark on Lamb
Quote
Out like a Lamb: We're hearing that Mike Lamb, just designated for assignment by the Twins, has told his old buddies in Houston he'd love to play in Philadelphia. And with the Phillies still hunting for a left-handed bat off the bench, they clearly would be interested. One big question is whether the Phillies (or anyone else) would try to trade for Lamb or just wait until the Twins release him. He can't be released until next week, meaning he wouldn't be eligible for postseason play. But because he already has cleared trade waivers, he could be dealt at any time.

I've been thinking he's been done for at least five years.  Proof that having photos of fifteen or so GM's wearing nothing but a dog collar and a butt plug can really help your career.
