Carlos pops up to 2nd with the bases loaded and nobody out.

Today's SS, Loretta, is up batting 5th with 1 out.

Loretta ends a 10-pitch AB with a line single to LF, scoring Kaz and Bourn. Berkman to 3rd. Still 1 out, with Spaz coming to bat.

Here's a surprise: Spaz grounds to SS, forcing Loretta at 2nd. But he beats the throw at first (or the throw was never made, don't know which), so Berkman scores the 3rd run.

Man on 1st, 2 outs for Wiggy.

Wiggy strikes out for the 3rd out. 40 minutes to play the first inning, 36 pitches for Snell, 27 for Moehler.

End of 1st: Pirates 4, Astros 3.

By the way, I've got to leave for a meeting in five minutes or so, so I'll be unable to continue PBP.

Ok, I think this qualifies as irony:

Just as GameDay informs me that Moehler served up a gopherball to Sanchez on the first pitch of the top of the 2nd, Outlook pops up with a notice about the arrival of mail from astros.com informing me that "Wolf Trade increases Astros' playoff hopes".  Right...

My bad: it wasn't a gopherball to Sanchez. McLouth had reached on an error by Berkman, and Sanchez' hit was a double that scored McLouth. However, the email subject is unchanged.

In the meantime, Bay grounds out 5-3, moving Sanchez to 3rd.
Then Nady grounds out 5-3 to end the inning.

Middle of 2: Pirates 5, Astros 3.

And I'm off to meeting purgatory. Go 'Stros!

Bourn got a hit.  Not quite as powerful as the Matsui, but I wanted to show some enthusiasm.

Wilson: struck out looking.  3 outs.

Lee: singles to right.  None out, Lee on 1B.

Loretta: singled on a liner to center.  None out, Lee at 2B, Loretta at 1B.

Wigginton: walked.  2 outs, runners at 1B and 2B.

conference at the mound, Grabow warming up in the pen

No, but he did make an out, so Bourn gets to start the next game.

I should be more excited to see Tejada up in a 1-run game in the 9th.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.
