Did anyone go and see the Dark Knight this weekend?

Here's my opinion: this is one of the finest superhero movies yet. It's completely taut and well-executed, except for the ending which is completely illogical. Heath Ledger has a unique take on the Joker. Whether you like it or hate it, you have to admire the performance. Personally, I loved it (and as a comics fan, I was fully expecting to hate it). It's quite different from Nicholson or any version you'll find in the comics. My psychiatrist friend explained to me that the sucking noise that the Joker makes when talking is a sign of someone who has been on anti-psychotic drugs for a long time. Just a little detail, but perhaps emblematic of the work Ledger put in to make the role so memorable.

Also, this film is absolutely not for children. It will give them nightmares. I have no idea why this movie wasn't rated "R," as it's full of sadistic violence. Best summer movie I've seen so far, waaay better than Indiana Jones, Prince Caspian, or Wall-E.

Completely agreed on "fit for children" - I have no idea who Warner Bros. bribed to get that PG-13, but I can't imagine taking a child to see it. Not just the makeup or effects - the entire story was too dark for a child.

To me, the most striking part was Harvey Dent's story. It takes a superb storyteller to create tragedy when you know the outcome in advance - and Nolan and Eckhardt combined to do exactly that. I was amazed at how crushing Dent's invebitable turn felt.

Saw it last night when I got back to Austin.

I was expecting it to be awesome, and was still completely blown away. I'm planning on seeing it again tonight.

Heath Ledger was terrifying.

The Nolans will never get enough credit for this - but the decision to move the Joker from "acid changes him into a crazy guy" to "some people just want to watch the world burn" is a big part of what makes him so terrifying.

I thought it was good, but not the best. I think it was a little dry and Batman has such a boring personality. "The Dark Knight Returns" made Batman interesting by giving him a sadistic sense of humor. I think Gary Oldman's Gordon was my favorite character and Maggie Gyllenhall my least favorite. But overall, I preferred Hellboy II and Iron Man.

On the other hand, they showed a trailer for "The Watchmen" and I want a ticket now goddamit.

I read another review where the author didn't like the ending. I thought the ending was great. I have no idea how they (Nolan/ future screenwriters)'re going to dig themselves out of the hole they've basically put Batman in, but I thought it was great.

Also, let me second or fourth or eighth or whatever number we're on the fact that Ledger was absolutely badass. God, he was a creepy, creepy motherfucker.

Although I loved this movie, I still think "The Incredibles" is the best superhero movie. I'm not sure, but I probably like the first Spider-Man movie just a tad better as well. We'll see how The Dark Knight grows on me, I will definitely see it again.

Harvey Dent's story was great too. Perhaps it could have done with a little more foreshadowing, but it was still great. The only thing I didn't like is that they killed him (?). Batman matching wits with Two-Face would be a great third movie. I'm not sure who Batman will face off with in the inevitable sequel. Catwoman isn't sinister enough, Penguin isn't psychotic (at least, not in the comics, he's more of a mob boss/criminal mastermind) and the Riddler is too goofy. Those are the only Batman villains non-comic fans would recognize.

Personally, I think Cornelius Stirk would be a good fit for the bleak world that Nolan has created. Stirk is a cannibal hypnotist that eats the hearts of his victims. Of course, there's no way that could get a PG-13.

There's the problem. If he's not dead, why cover up for him? And why destroy Batman's reputation as a symbol of hope to do it? It's not like he's fit to be in office.

And the Joker won't be back. They wouldn't recast the role. Plus, what more can the Joker do?

I think their argument is that Harvey Dent, DA, is dead; even if he survived (which was certainly not implied), all that's left is Two-Face.

And frankly, I've never found Two-Face to be an interesting character, and I'd be surprised if Nolan brought him back.

Both of the movies so far have had 2 bad guys.

Scarecrow and The League of Shadows.

Joker and Two Face.

I was waiting for this thread.

The only thing I didn't like about this film is that any sequel will be very hard-pressed to live up to its greatness.

Nine months ago I thought there was no way Patrick Verona/Sir Ullrich von Lichtenstein/Campy Gay cowboy could transform himself into a sadistic, murderous anarchist, and I wasn't alone. But we were all very, very wrong.

That's my fear. I've never seen a C. Nolan movie that I didn't thoroughly enjoy, but I would be completely ready for disappointment with Batman 3.

I think they'd have to adjust the scale of the movie, no more global threats. Maybe a business rival for Wayne that doubles as a rival for Batman? Or a simpler detective story with Batman tracking down a serial killer? You can't really top blowing up a hospital. But...doing less will probably seem like a letdown no matter what.

Rather than writing some long spiel on how The Dark Knight Returns should be the mold for the next movie (it wouldn't translate in anything resembling its original form), I'll just say that if I had my way, this movie would be it. Story, acting, characters, pacing, intensity... all too good to top. Especially with Heath Ledger gone (anyone find the "Keith Ledger" joke as funny as I do?). And this ending was the perfect way to leave things, in my opinion.

And this bit from the midnight screening I attended: as the trailer for The Spirit was ending, after all the mm-mm-good Sam Jackson-ness, someone in the audience let out a perfectly timed "...tasty burger!!!" just as the audio cut out. It's had me in stitches since.

I agree, to an extent. But it's going to make far too much $$$ for then *not* to make another one, and as long as Nolan is attached I couldn't imagine it being bad, even if it's nowhere as good.

I thought the movie was great. The only thing I feel is lacking is that they aren't developing the character of Batman very well. I understand its harder because they can't have thought bubbles and his feelings have to be expressed through conversations with others, but a few of the guys I watched with had the same sentiment. I'm being nitpicky about that though.. because otherwise it was a great movie with great drama.

Subnuclear is right though, Batman can be a lot more interesting. If you can stand to read a comic book, I highly recommend, "The Dark Knight Returns" Batman, which is written and illustrated by Frank Miller. Lots of great lines from Batman in that one

"It was a lot of work, carrying 250 pounds of anti-social punk to the highest point in Gotham. The scream alone is worth it."

"There are seven working defenses from this position. Three of them disarm with minimal contact. Three of them kill. The other one...CRUNCH! as he snaps some punk's leg...hurts."

Oh, and by the way, it looks like Bale allegedly went all Dark Knight on his family. Hope it isn't true.

I own a couple of first editions of that Graphic Novel. I'm aware that he can be written better. But in comparison to Ledger's Joker (or even Nicholson's) Batman is a more boring character.

The 2nd time I saw Dark Knight, I really noticed how awesome Gary Oldman was in it. Ledger completely eclipses everyone else, but Oldman played his part beautifully as well.

Bale recently said he would be very against introducing Robin into the next movie. I agree, there is no place for the boy wonder in this version of Batman.

Lord I hope not. Ditto on Robin's inclusion, although I agree the sniveling little dude will probably have a bigger role in a subsequent film. I'm almost certain (with no evidence to back this up, mind you) there will be a 3rd movie. You can't leave Batman as the hunted and not give some resolution.

Part that made me wince the most: when Batman drops the mobster (Maroney?) from the balcony and his ankles snap on the street below. Made me shudder.

Wonderful movie. I'll see it again. And again....
