Lee gets a single, advances Berkman to third, and Tejada strikes out ending the top of the first.

Top 1, no score, Berkman left on third.

Backe on to get his ship righted.

McClouth grounds out to Loretta, 1 out
Sanchez barely misses a double by third base, but flies out to Lee
Doumit strikes out on a big hook

Backe's curveball looks good so far.

Pence grounds out, 1 out
Wiggington flies out in foul territory right against the rail in RF, 2 outs
Ausmus lines over short for a single, man on first, 2 outs
Backe (sporting a .300+ average) grounds out to short, 3 outs.

JD mentions that Coop would like to rest his relievers again today, so he may be counting on Backe to go deep regardless of his performance, barring the interruption of play by the nearby rain cell.

Bay gets his bat on a decent curveball, grounds out to third, 1 out

Nady singles just between Wiggington and Tejada on a weakly hit ground ball. He picked the ball nearly off the dirt. Another good pitch hit by the Pirates. Man on first, 1 out

LaRoche rips one just past a diving Berkman. Backe didn't get that fastball in far enough. Man on first and second, one out.

Batista strikes out swinging at big curve outside and in the dirt. Man on first and second, two outs.

Thanks to the growing LaRussa fan base, the 8th spot is Snell in a key situation and Backe Ks him on a low outside fastball (questionable strike, but I'll take it).

Back to the top of the order for the Astros in the third.

Erstad gets behind early and grounds to second, 1 out.

Loretta behind 0-2 as well on a tough low curve called a strike. Loretta swings at the next curve which is a bit lower and grounds out. Close play due to a tough throw, but Loretta is out. 2 outs

Snell throws four straight balls to Berkman. Man on first, 2 outs.

2 more balls to Lee, next fouled, Carlos watched a hittable pitch and was visibly upset about it, fouled the next down the left field line, and flies out to center. 3 outs.

Don't want to ruin my hall of fame chances, but got distracted by a phone call. Had to rewind to catch what was going on there, especially the last play...

Wilson flies out
McClouth flies out
Sanchez singles
Doumit grounds to Berkman who gets the lead (and final) out at second, but Tejada launches the ball into the stands in an attempt to record a fourth out.

Rain clouds look bad, bullpens were covered up during the inning and the grounds crew came out after they left the field. It would be a shame if Backe's outing was interrupted.

Clouds are moving overhead, the 4th is off on and running with no score or rain...for now.

Tejada hits a foul homerun to the big steel spiral walkway in left, then grounds to short. 1 out

Pence RIPS a homer to deep center. Over the "PIRATES" hedge in the batters eye area. A "hanging fastball" according to JD. 1 out. The race for five innings is on for the Astros, the slow play is on for the Pirates.

Wiggington lines one to center. JD comments on Snell's delivery, he appears to be tiring. The bullpen starts to work.

Wiggington out by a couple steps on a stolen base attempt, not even close. Perhaps this was part of the race for the official game strategy...JD speculates as well. Rain starting to come down.

Ausmus walks and that's the end for Snell. Man on first 2 outs.

4th inning PBP to continue in next post following new pitcher TJ Bean (?)

So i'm guessing the Pirates announcers are a little whacked when the called it a "wind aided" homer a second ago?

Rain delay now official...

I may pick up the PBP again depending on the length of the delay. Anyone feel free to pick it up.

Oh and pray to the BBGs for a short delay so we can get Backe back on the hill. It will be a cruel trick of their's if this start is spoiled.

Top 6: Pirates stick with their cheap bourbon

Pence: First pitch swinging, deep shot in the hole at SS. Wilson adds another web gem to his resume throwing off his back foot deep in the hole. I was sure Pence would have that beat. None on, one out.
Wiggington: Back to the pitcher. None on, two outs.
Ausmus: Walks, one on, two outs
Newhan (pinch hits for Borko): Newhan cheats no one with his second swing and forgot to make his third. Down looking.

Yeah if I were Erstad, I'd probably be woofing a little bit.  Looks/sounds like a mess out there.  Trying to find a liner coming out of the rain and lights of a relatively unfamiliar park must be a nightmare.

Bottom 6: Wright in to pitch, rain in to drive off remaining fans

LaRoche: Wright appears to have trouble with command, likely due to the heavy rain. LaRoche rips one to the left center gap. Erstad almost gets it with a diving attempt in the rain. Erstad gets up and yells at the umps for not calling the game. Man on second, no outs

Bautista: K's on a high fastball.

Umps in and the game is probably over. The grounds crew has to wait 45 minutes before calling the game, and could potentially start it back up if they think the weather will clear later.

In any case, I'll be abandoning the PBP for the night.

Go Rain!!

Anybody else still up?

If they're not still up, I hope the rest of 'em called it a night after voting Caballo in '08.  Before the last rain delay, Carlos was overheard supporting a measured withdrawl of the troops.
I say smorgasbord!

Nuts, two fly outs to center end the inning.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

LaRoche with a laser to right makes it a one run game in the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs.

Is it just me or does Astros pitching seem to be doing a mighty fine job of blowing it with 2 outs lately?
