Villarreal was the guy I figured who would make or break the pen this year. While the bullpen could certainly be more effective, and would very much enjoy the Oscar we were hoping for, Sampson looks like he is doing a good job filling the spot that Oscar was expected to (7th inning or 2 effective innings guy) and Moehler has filled the job we were hoping Sampson would do. A pitching staff, moreso than any aspect of this game, is incredibly organic.

Excellent points. Geary generally is a one inning pitcher. Villareal was needed to do two inning stints, and he could barely give us a scoreless inning every now and then. I knew that it was a matter of time before they would be forced to address his situation in some fashion.

I have a feeling that he doesn't accept it.  Man I wish I could get demoted from my job, and then because I don't feel like doing some other job, I can just say hey I'll be working from home for the next year and a half, be sure to mail me my paycheck.  I know the MLBPA is the strongest union, but man I have problem with the fact that you don't perform like you're being paid to do, and when you're re-assigned to help fix your performance you say to heck with it, and you still get paid.  It ought to be if you don't take the assignment, you don't get paid.

It is.  If he clears waivers and then refuses the assignment, he doesn't get paid, he becomes a free agent.  I'm thinking someone someone must want him, so he's likely to be either traded or claimed on waivers.

If he keeps playing for them, then yes, they have to keep paying him.

ETA:  Villareal can also accept the assignment now, but then elect free agency at the end of the season if the Astros do not repurchase his contract.  In other words, he can still change his mind about wanting to be a free agent, even after he accepts the assignment.
