There are certain players in Major League Baseball that make it hard to say you have to be a fine athlete to be a baseball player.  Prince Fielder is one of those guys.

Mystery solved.  Bill Brown talked to Mike Maddux before the game about the pat down he does on the pitcher when he visits the mound.  Maddux says he puts his hand on the pitcher's collarbone and tries to feel for his pulse with his thumb to gauge the heart rate.  He's not just handsy, he has a purpose.

Am I the only one who really, really loathes Braun?  Not necessarily because he is good, which he is, but moreso because he looks (and acts?) like such a goddamn twat.  I don't know if any other player has ever climbed my most hated ladder so fast.

So we've got Fielder and Braun, anyone else want to add to this list of disliked players?

Did you guys hear the comment from Brownie that supposedly Yost puts his hand on the pitcher's collar bone to get the heart rate of his pitcher while he visits the mound?

Is this guy serious? Is he really making decisions based on this? If its too high does he start massaging the shoulder to loosen him up?

I don't know, just seemed ridiculous, but Yost has been known to bat his pitcher 8th, so I guess I shouldn't rule anything out.

are we only talking about Brewers? Braun is on my list b/c he seems to have an attitude, but my all time most hated players are Edmonds & Pujols. Also never liked Eric Davis.

I don't dislike Braun. I think it's a Jew baseball player (Koufax, Greenberg) thing but I'm not Jewish. I can't stand Fielder or Hart.

Look up a couple posts.  That's Mike Maddux.  And if you've followed Maddux you'll know he does this almost every time he visits the mound.

It was the pitching coach, Mike Maddux, not Ned Yost, the mgr. Seemed reasonable to me. Not a deciding factor, but one of many.

No, Braun's quickly become perhaps my most hated in the league.  I used to cut Pujols some slack in the past because of his immense talent, but after the bush shit he's pulled this season he's right up there too.  Edmonds too.

I was thinking it might happen, too, but I suppose that the very reason it was a hit was the same reason that it couldn't go for four bases.

Pretty good tool on tracking homeruns, including speed off the bat. Berkman's bomb the other day had the second longest "true" distance of the year. True meaning adjusted to a neutral setting.

Well done, automatic nickname right there.  The pitchers at Round Rock would get creeped out by Maddux doing this, many of them started to complain.  He couldn't keep his hands to himself and none of them appreciated the extra touches Mike would add to his duties.

Brownie: "Only the Phillies have used fewer batting orders than the Astros."

That is a surprise to me.

Not to me.  Coop was absolutely Dierkerish in his lineups, it was hard for the reserves to get the PT (and Cheito could never get going with that sort of playing time).  BTW - the team had a closed door meeting today with Ed Wade and Cecil Cooper.  It was announced to them that certain players will get more PT, like Geoff Blum.  I think Blum and Wiggington officially became a platoon (see: Garner/Walling or Berry/Spiers).  Wiggington will provide the right handed power bat off the bench that the team needs and of course Blum is a much better defender on the field.

That really leaves a hole at the six hole though while Pence is playing the role of leadoff, but I'm pretty sure Bourn will be back at leadoff within a week or two here.  Maybe sooner.

I agree with Bourn returning to the leadoff slot, he's the best long term option, but he needs to do better than what he did before.

Footer's on it, but reports that the platoon is a surprise to Wiggington.  Interesting.

Quote
Ty Wigginton made a costly error during that game, bobbling a double-play ball that opened the doors to a five-run Cardinals seventh. That defensive miscue may or may not be the reason why he was not in the lineup on Tuesday. Cooper shot down that theory, saying simply that he met with several players while the team was in Pittsburgh last week to tell them he may start some of the bench players more.

On Tuesday, Geoff Blum was inserted in at third base.

"Don't be surprised if you see a lot more of that," Cooper said.

Will third base turn into a platoon situation?

"I'm not going to say that," Cooper said. "You're not going to get me to commit to that. But I will say, [Blum is] going to play.

"My veteran guys on the bench, for a while, we were going through a period where they didn't play that much," the manager continued. "I just think they need to play. When they swing the bat well, they deserve a chance to play. That's what we're going to do."

Asked for his take on the situation, Wigginton said he knew nothing of Cooper's decision.

"I don't know anything about it," Wigginton said. "As far as I know, I'm playing every day and that's it. I was kind of surprised I wasn't in there today, with the off-day yesterday. I felt like I swung the bat well lately and played good [defense]."

Footer also said Ed Wade conducted the meeting, not Cooper.  Odd goings on.  If Cooper is going to platoon Wiggington, he should come out and say so.

Mystery solved.  Bill Brown talked to Mike Maddux before the game about the pat down he does on the pitcher when he visits the mound.  Maddux says he puts his hand on the pitcher's collarbone and tries to feel for his pulse with his thumb to gauge the heart rate.  He's not just handsy, he has a purpose.

yeah, sure, Mike. he started that touching stuff in RR, and it was hilarious to watch. he had a set routine on each visit that never changed. we started calling his next touch during the visits. if he tried that with Brocail, he'd be known subsequently as One Arm Maddux.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.

Or at very least, Buster Bluth.  "Heyyy, brother."
