Congrats to the Red Messiah on reaching this milestone.  Given the way his body has broken down over the past 8 years, I think mmost people safely put him in the "not juicing" category.  Unfortunately, IMHO, the second half of his career has clouded most people's memories of this guy in the 90s.  He had the best pure swing I've ever seen, and it seemed like he could do it all on the field.  I was legitimately concerned when the Reds acquired him in 2000, but luckily for us, that didn't turn out so well for them.

Great player, great achievement.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

If the Reds build a statue in his honor, they wont have any lack of examples for the pose.

unfortunately, in this era i don't think it's safe to put anybody in the "not juicing" or 'did it the right way' category.

now with twice teh gay.

How would that be possible?

(The answer, of course, is "Spartans vs. He-Man")

Uh, that's exactly the type of thing many point to as evidence that a player is/was a juicer.
Lighten up, Francis.

He just decided to stop juicing in 2000, years before anyone else?

Some guy on some blog, which I can't remember, commented recently that MLB.tv had a commercial running talking about Griffey's upcoming achievement. During the commercial, they showed a picture of Aaron, Ruth, and Mays... but nothing about Bonds or Sosa... and then said something about Griffey being the next or some shit.

Now I didn't see it, but if true, it is quite a position to take by MLB...

He and Albert really think Epimanondas was on to something.

Junior will always be a favorite player of mine, and was almost singularly responsible for my renewed love of the game (with "Extra Innings" getting an honorable mention...).  After the Astros let Ryan go to the Rangers and the 1990 lockout, etc., etc., etc., I'd mostly lost interest in baseball.  I'd still watch/listen to games that Ryan pitched in (on occasion), but that was about it.  By the end of the 1994 debacle I'd had it.

Moved to Seattle in 1995 and went to a Mariners game with some folks because it was something to do.  Can't tell you who the Mariners played or if the Mariners won, but remember being absolutely amazed by watching Junior play.  His swing appeared effortless, his defense amazing.  Watching him play that game was truly "poetry in motion."  It was clear watching him that he loved the game, and by the time it was over I did again as well.

While it was hard watching him struggle with injuries while with the Reds and the "what could have beens," I have remained a Junior fan and will always continue to be.  So while he may be "the Red Messiah" here at SnS, he'll always be the kid that brought me back to the game to me.

Congrats Junior!
In the end, my dissolution with the game of baseball will not be a result of any loss of love for the game, rather from the realization that I can no longer bear the anger its supposed stewards cause to be built up in my soul. -Lee (01/08/2013)

I'm a big fan of Griffey, and I agree that its a shame that some newer fans (I'm not exactly a salty veteran) may not realize how amazing he was early in his career.  I firmly believe he did not juice - of course I have no actual facts to back up my assertion, just what I believe.  He's got a beautiful swing. One of the coolest facts I heard is he never struck out in a high school game.

I keep hearing a rumor from my friends that Griffey may be heading to the Rays.  Sorry, don't have any linkage to back it up, so take it with a grain of salt.

Article from John Heyman at SI talks about that scenario.  LINK
