This will not be useful unless you can fix the horizontal alignment.  Word wrap is killing you by adding space in only one column at a time.

Not sure what you mean.  Checked it on two computers and it comes out in proper column/row format.  Anyone else having a problem with it?

You tipped me off to the problem.  If youmake the page wide enough, everything lines up (including the "signed" column).  Make it narrower, and line wrap kills you.

Here is what I see.

The word wrap is off, notice the names like "Davidson, Charles" going to two lines.  That drops the next column of information into the wrong setup diagonally.  However, that may be a Firefox browser format problem or the fact that I use "normal" as my text view for Firefox browsers (and should use deceased or something else).  So no worries, just saying it's not working for me.

ET: I decreased my text view to very small and the alignment is perfect now.  But I need bifocals to read it.  Bummer.

Background on Jordan Lyle from hometown paper.

Hartsville sports fans have become accustomed to hearing the name Jordan Lyles. Lyles was a member of Hartsville High School’s state champion baseball team in 2007.

He broke every major school receiving record in the 2007 football season for the Foxes on his way to an all-state award and a trip to the Shrine Bowl. And, he was a preliminary choice for McDonald’s All-American in basketball at the beginning of the 2007-08 season.

He finished the 2008 baseball season with a 1.86 ERA and a record of 7-2.

Game notes have him listed as RHP as well, so checked the A&M website which list him as LHP/OF.  Will make the change on the next update. 

Although I didn't catch that one, there were a couple of positions listed for players that didn't jive with BA either and seemed a tad questionable.  Any of those in the know feel free to edit (or let me know and I'll edit).

Depends on the draft, if you draft alot of 4yr SRs, then it is low, if you draft mostly HS players it can be considered high...  It is about what you would expect at this point, I think.

There is still 2 SRs left to sign, and then the intertesting part starts, how many of those that can play somewhere else choose to take the money offered and play in the minors.

You typically want to look at what is your % for non-4yr SRs and top 15 round picks.  The more you sign of each, typically the better.

Gaston has not agreed to a contract with the Houston Astros. He said he would sign when he arrives in New York on Tuesday. Gaston will play for the Tri-City Valley Cats in Troy, N.Y.

“I’m still looking at the contract,” he said. “I will sign.”

Gaston was drafted by the Astros in the seventh round of the major-league draft on Friday. He said he was expecting to sign for more than the $120,000 slot.

Seaton, who is a Tulane University signee, said he will be strictly a pitcher wherever he goes. He said he has had talks with the Astros several times since he was selected, and the sides will continue to talk.

I don't think DQ is going to be used at all with anyone.  Last year, they used Nolan with at least one of the lower drafted kids who signed (Pitkin).  That is not an option this year.  I would wonder about Bags or Biggio being used.

Patton was reported prior to the draft of being solid to Texas and wanting 1st round money.  He signed for late 2nd round money and stated he wasn't that solid to Texas and didn't know where that was coming from.  Alot of this is a game played by advisers & parents to position their player in the best possible spot. The Patton's had their figure going into negotiation and they were able to get close to it. 

I am sure the Seaton kid and his adviser have let the Astros know what they are looking for.  The Astros seem optimistic about getting him signed.  It would be a coup if the do.

Kody Hinze is on the Greeneville Roster.  He wasn't drafted but was signed as a NDFA out of Angelina JC.  He played for Angelina in 06 & 07 but I can't find where he played in 08.  He is a 1b who was drafted in the 05 draft by the Pirates as a DFE.  He didn't sign and hasn't been drafted since. 

In 07, he set Angelina records in batting average (.458), HR (15) and had the second most RBI (61).  He is their career leader in HR (27) and RBI (98).

I'm down on Seaton signing at the moment.  It feels like a flier pick to me.  I'm fairly certain they drafted Davidson in the 3rd in part because they thought they could get him to sign for money in that area.  I actually thought that Dy... and Seaton would be the hold outs.  Time will tell, but that they've gotten 4 of the 6 high schoolers from the top 10 is terrific.

Perhaps in reference to the fact it will cost above slot to get Seaton out of his Tulane commitment, and those deals are generally not announced until the end of the signing period so as not to disrupt the rest of the slotting...

With Dydalewicz signing earlier this week (thanks for the heads-up Einertson), the Astros now have 28 of the 52 draftees signed.  The Astros have now signed 9 of their 12 picks from the first 10 rounds and 16 of their 22 picks from the first 20 rounds.  The 3 unsigned picks from the top 10 rounds are: Castro-1 (still in the CWS and cannot sign yet), Davidson-3 and Seaton-3S.

News about signings at Astros.com and Chron.com has slowed to a crawl, so any notes on progress would be appreciated.

Wow, never heard of that site but that's an incredible amount of info, thanks. Nice especially to read such in-depth scouting reports on the lesser-known guys. Pretty interesting about Steele:

But some scouts believe he could be a steal in the fourth round as he is a superior center fielder, has above-average arm strength, gets down the line in 3.9 seconds and can turn on a fastball. The Tuscon Citizen had these comments on Dydalewicz.  LINK

"We are still in negotiations," said Dydalewicz, an eighth-round pick of the Houston Astros from Lake Travis High School in Spicewood, Texas. "At the end of the month, hopefully we can get this over with."  Reports that Dydalewicz signed a contract were incorrect, he said. He's looking for a $500,000 signing bonus and future college tuition to be paid as part of his talks with the Astros.
Keeping Dydalewicz would be a big deal for the Wildcats, who have lost nine of their 18 current and incoming players who were drafted three weeks ago.

"If I'm correct, the Astros' area scout was supposed to be in Castro's home today or yesterday. I was visiting my ailing mother, so my calls over the last three days are all running together. I will tell you that I spoke with Bobby Heck, the scouting director, yesterday or Monday and he told me he was real optimistic about signing Castro soon. I think he was going to visit with Davidson this week. He said it's still looking promising with Seaton and Dydalwicz. Once I settle back into my routine, I'll start bugging more of my sources more often."

Castro gets visit: Joe Graham, the Astros’ North California and Nevada area scout, visited with first round pick Jason Castro on Wednesday.  “It went well,” Astros scouting director Bobby Heck said of Graham’s visit with Castro. “It went very well. That’s a better way to put.”  ***  “I would expect to meet with the family again on Sunday or Monday,” Heck said.

He also wrote that Seaton was at Minute Maid (this evening?) and said he was "optimistic" about signing with the Astros.

“We’re still optimistic on both he and (Ross) Seaton and a couple of the other guys who are still out there that we’ll get them signed in short order and get them in our system,” Wade said.

As a compensation pick for not signing a player last year, if the Astros do not sign Seaton they will not receive draft compensation for him next year.  They had every incentive to draft a player there that would sign.

Per McTaggart's 'afternoon' blog today (Astros waiting to hear from Castro):

On Castro: 

"I talked to (scouting director) Bobby Heck about two hours ago (3 p.m.) and we're continuing to make progress on it, literally," Wade said. "It's hour-to-hour at this point in time.  "We're going to remain optimistic we're going to get him out in the system sooner rather than later. Where we're at right now, we've put the appropriate package for them to consider and hopefully they give us a nod in the short term and he gets out playing."

And "progress is being made" on Seaton and Davidson (no word on Dydalewicz):

"It's partly market-driven at this point," he said. "Guys want to see what's happening around them, and we as a club want to see what's happening around us to see if where we're at is appropriate.  "I'm going to remain optimistic on all these grounds that we're going to run the table and get all these guys done. Every conversation we've had has been carried a clear indication they want to wear an Astros uniform."

With the signing of Castro, the Astros now have signed 28 of their 52 draft picks.  All but 5 of the top 20 picks have been signed, and the it is generally expected (per Pinwheel and McTaggart) that Davidson (rd 3), Seaton (rd 3s) and potentially Dydalewicz (rd 8) will be signed as well. 

Additionally, ran across a site called PGCrosschecker.com which includes signing status and bonus for the top 10 rounds.  LINK.  Hasn't been updated to include Castro yet, but does show the following Astros:

Lyles (rd 1s) - $930,000;  Austin (rd 2) - $715,000;  Steele (rd 4) - $267,000;  Duncan (rd 5) - $185,000; 
Shuck (rd 6) - $150,000;  Gaston (rd 7) - $150,000; Cruz (rd 9) - $150,000;  Holloway (rd 10) - $150,000.

If correct, the Astros paid significantly more than most of the other teams from rounds 7 - 10, and Castro is only the 3rd pick in the top 10 to sign to date [Beckham - $6,150,000 (Rays - 1st overall); Skipworth - $2,300,000 (Marlins, 5th overall).

Justice has a nice read in his blog today about the Astros signing their 48th round pick, Danny Meszaros.  LINK.  Describes Meszaros as "one of those guys that might be signed if a roster spot is open, or if he had a good summer."  After missing the entire '07 season rehabbing from injury and having a sub-par draft year, the Astros nevertheless chose him in the 48th round at the urging of area scout, J.D. Alleva.  Meszaros was signed Friday after 19.2 innings in the Cape League with a 1.37 ERA and 25 strike outs.  "It's an underdog story: 22 yr old Jr., below average stats in spring of draft year, shoulder surgery, and 5'10", 175 lbs. As I type, he is driving to Troy, NY to meet his new teammates later today in Tri-City.''

With the signing of Meszaros, the Astros now have signed 29 of their 52 draft picks.  All but 5 of the top 20 picks have been signed.

Tulane is ridiculous. I was accepted there earlier this year and (without going into numbers) the scholarship they gave me was substantially larger than any other offer I got. Even so, it was way more expensive than anywhere else.

The thing is, the Astros are in a reasonable position here.  They've signed the players they needed to sign and losing one out of the top 20 isn't a huge deal.  They'll get a 3S pick next year as compensation if he doesn't sign.

The thing is, the Astros are in a reasonable position here.  They've signed the players they needed to sign and losing one out of the top 20 isn't a huge deal.  They'll get a 3S pick next year as compensation if he doesn't sign.

ESPN is reporting that 9th overall pick (Nationals) Crow has signed with Forth Worth Cats of the American Association (LINK).

From the story, it appears that the contract will not preclude him from signing with the Nationals if a deal can be reached before the Friday midnight deadline though.

Only Chase Davidson (round 3), Josh Poytress (round 16) and Shae Robin (round 20) were not signed from the first 20 rounds.   

And, as noted in the draft review, Robin quit baseball a couple of weeks after being drafted so the Astros had no chance of signing him.

Apparently the Astros were close with 34th rounder Jankowski

Going to Miami was something Jankowski thought he might not do during the two-plus months after the Astros drafted him. Now, he will not be eligible for the draft again until after his junior season.

According to Jankowski, Houston offered a "pretty nice deal." He would have been assigned to the Astros' instructional league before playing for the Greeneville (Tenn.) Astros, a rookie-league affiliate.

"They really made me think about it," said Jankowski, who finished his scholastic career with a WPIAL-record 36 home runs in addition to a plus-600 on-base percentage and back-to-back Class AAAA championships.

A project at catcher at the minor-league level, Jankowski opted for Miami in hopes of improving his defense.
