Angel Hernandez at it again

Pitches Lugo for looking at him, then sends Francona home just because.

Jeez, it's not like he caught Lugo beating his wife.  The lesson, as always: Angel Hernandez is a dick.

Damn Angel Hernandez for making me agree with Julio Lugo.

I don't keep up with who is umpiring, generally. But Hernandez can be such a distraction that its getting hard to ignore him. Have the umpires made themselves more visible this year or is it me? I don't mind them bungling calls, that's part of the game. But the Travis Bickle impersonations...I can only hope that their union  negotiated for mental health benefits.

Angel Hernandez's umpiring career will end when he attempts to stab a player or manager with his plate brush for arguing balls and strikes.

The player/manager will then be ejected for touching his plate brush.

Hernandez and Bucknor have always been in over their heads and you usually see this in July or August when they completely lose control of situations and chaos ensues.  They are both so clearly agitated and defensive now that it will be a wonder if they make it through the season without a major incident.

There is no truth to the rumor that the MLB instant replay rule will be called the "Angel Cam" next season.

White Sox fans will call it that.

I can't find the video online, but ump Mark Wegner ordered Jeff Suppan to pitch while Brian McCann was standing out of the batter's box last night. Link

Quote
Hitters on both sides were frustrated with umpire Mark Wegner's strike zone. It boiled over for the Braves in the eighth inning when Wegner ordered Brian McCann into the batter's box when he was trying to argue.

Wegner signaled for Suppan to throw a pitch, which McCann was nowhere near ready to hit. After striking out shortly thereafter McCann had more words for Wegner.

"[Jason] Kendall probably sets up lowest of any catcher in baseball, and if he has to reach his arm down to catch it, it's not a strike," said McCann who struck out three times in the game, including twice on called strikes. "I felt a couple of my at-bats tonight I got rang up on pitches I didn't think were strikes. I was letting him know I thought those pitches were out of the zone. He just told me to get in the box."

Umps are getting raked through the coals lately.
Don't think twice, it's alright.

The umpires are still the umpires. Lugo should have better measured his words. As fans, we can comment on the umpires. Having witnessed his work in the minor leagues, I personally thought that Hernandez wasn't qualified by ability or temperament when they hired him, but what do I know?

I don't think Lugo said anything.  He yelled for an appeal on a check swing, which isn't out of the ordinary.  Angel is nucking futs.

I saw the replay of this last night. The pitch in question wasn't that bad, and McCann was being a Barrett about it and wouldn't get back in the box. Ump told him twice to get in the box and play ball, then said Fuck it and signalled for Suppan to go ahead.

When I read this thread, I thought to myself "Well, it's on the player to know how to argue with an umpire."  You can be in the box and show him or even tell him of your displeasure.  But stepping out and jawing is purposely trying to show up the umpire with the express interest of pointing to him and calling him an idiot.  I think in this case, it's on the player to know what he can and cannot do to get his message across.

I'd be disappointed with McCann if I were his teammate.  Why make a spectacle of the situation... play the game and get over it.

I was referring to Lugo's post-game comments about Hernandez.

But there is something wrong with Angel Hernandez.  Players and managers need to talk about him.  I'm not crazy about umpires getting trashed in the media, but I'm even less crazy about shitty umpires with anger issues.

All MLB umpires would be dead inside of a week if that happened.
