Anybody going to be on Corpus tonight?
« on: May 22, 2008, 11:07:12 am »
Not me, driv3e from Maryland is a bit long.  First hand account of Wandy would be nice.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

Ortiz had Rodriguez on for a chat today, however they had to cut it short when it was revealed,

LibertyMark: You're driving??

Elaine_Sharpe: We are, and Wandy actually needs to lay down and rest before we get to Corpus so we're going to have to cut the chat off a little early. Sorry guys

Elaine Sharpe is a Chronicle functionary in their "online sports department".  Why is she driving Wandy to Corpus?

Why is she driving Ortiz AND Wandy to Corpus?  Eh, probably because she may be Ortiz's online hand-holder/editor for the story he'll be filing tomorrow about Wandy.  Just a guess.

Astros let the Chronicle shuttle one of their pitchers?

Video is on the blog now.  Basically this is what Ortiz did with Sampson last year with Spring Training.  It is the Chron saving on gas.

They should pay halfsies on the gas bill then.

Or Wandy could pay his share of the gas by tossing newspapers Chronicles out the window on the way to Corpus.

I recall that.  But, I think this is a different situation.  That had more of a publicity angle for the Astros.  This situation is the Astros sending one of their main starters down to Corpus to make an important rehab start.  I'd think they'd have a trainer or coaches with him.  Is driving the only way to get to Corpus from Houston?

They were going to fly American, but felt the $15 charge for 1 piece of checked luggage was ridiculous.

Ortiz wouldn't fly American.  He'll only ride in vehicles that have a "Chavez Ravine or Bust!" bumper sticker.

Players drive themselves all the time when going up and down.  That is one of the reasons the Astros wanted their AA & AAA affiliates within a reasonable distance of Houston.

Should team safety policies prohibit players from driving when going down?

Certainly.  But I was wondering if any special accomodation would be considered for an important pitcher, just coming out of an injury, would they normally just cram him in an SUV with reporters and make him sleep in the back seat?

Why does he need to sleep?  Is it nappy time?

If you had to spend 5 consecutive hours in a car with The Jesus, wouldn't you be asleep as much of that time as you could manage?

JdJO...Wandy?  Whatcha doin?  Wanna play UNO?
WR...no thanks.  I gotta lay down here...
JdJO...Is there a Stuckey's on the way to Corpus?  I used to love Stuckey's.  They have the best pecan logs.  Would you like to share a pecan log with me?  You can have the first bite.
WR...Yeah, I'm gonna take a nap.
JdJO...Purely hypothetical, but who do you think your best friend among the reporters is?
WR...[snore]
JdJO...I love you.
WR...What?
JdJO...Nothing. {sigh}

5-hour road trip with JdJO, Justice, and Palilo... or a slow, painful death.  Choose.

Starting pitchers generally have very strict pregame rituals.  Wandy likes to curl up for a nap in the backseat of an SUV on top of Ortiz's dry cleaning before every game.

i don't see two options to choose from.
Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers - can you see how incredible this is going to be?

Does Ortiz have a boat?  They could have put in at the port, gone down the ship channel to Galveston, hung a right at the Intracoastal, and been in CC in 6 or 7 hours.  Depending on how fast they drove.  Assuming they weren't run over by a container ship or a string of barges.

Just shoot me.  Wandy, Continental flies to Corpus 8 times a day, takes an hour, costs around $300.  I'm sure the CBA has something to say about this kind of torture.

My InterWeb connection must be slow 'cause the video was choppy and all I could make out was Sr. Jose de Ortiz de Jesus saying something about a hummer.

I'm not sure about the environmental impacts, but that is the best use for a pile of "Chronicles" that I have heard of yet.
