I was watching the game in the gym.  It was interesting.  The VT players were wearing caps with the Yankees logo but the VT colors.  I didn't get it, although I understand that the caps are going to be auctioned off.  The game itself was pretty ugly.  But the idea was great and the $1 million contribution was substantial.  What I thought was coolest, was that after he played his couple of innings, A-Rod went and sat in the Virginia Tech dugout and was hanging out with the VT players.
Boom!

A touching and well-deserved gesture.  It is unfortunate that innocent people are forced to deal with the aftermath of such senseless acts.  There has been so much pain that has been inflicted by these disturbed individuals that it makes me wonder how we can prevent this from happening in the future.  It forces us to reflect on the importance of family and friends and hopefully helps us to focus on the things that are most important to us.  The poor souls who've had to deal with such an undeserving and senseless massacre deserve our empathy and prayers.

That being said, the Yankees organization still does not have my respect.
I say smorgasbord!

The whole thing reeks of self-promotion if you ask me.

Yes, that's generally my attitude when it comes to the new-found, post 9/11 grieving process.  I have a hard time believing that stunts like this, or all those ridiculous car ribbons you see for countless similar tragedies, make the friends/family of victims feel any better about their loss.

You're too young to be that crass and cynical. I think that the Yankmes were genuine.

Not everything the Yankees do is evil.

At least with the Yankees you don't have to worry about their closer beaning a kid for having the audacity to bunt.
Crazy Joe McCluskey was fucking nuts.  It's why they called him Crazy Joe.

It's not as much of a "Yankees" thing, as much as the whole grieving process has gotten so overblown post-9/11.  Not to sound insensitive, but we're what, a year removed from the VT tragedy?  It's not exactly on anyone's radar anymore... why feel the need to call attention to it?  When I told my roommate that the Yankees were playing at VT, he honestly FORGOT about the whole connection to the shootings, and thought the Yankees had some other connection to VT that he was missing.

This picture in particular makes my skin crawl... girl getting an autograph from Jeter AT the memorial:

Not everything the Yankees do is evil.

They're not evil: they're arrogant, rude, selfish, bullies.  But so are a lot of people.  A LOT.  But even they do something human once in a while.

In this case, it was a nice thing to do.  And it actually took some effort, as opposed to slapping a $2 bumper sticker on the back of your car.  You don't have to like the Yanks (I doubt many of us here do) but at least respect an honest effort to do something good for a change.

I generally find that I have no fucking business telling someone else the "proper" way to grieve.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

David, why are you denying the grieving community access to the healing process, a process so critical to our obtaining closure?

Yes, the Tower Garden on the north side of the main building.

Noe might be more equipped to answer that question... I'll defer to him.
