Astros vs. Tigers from Kissimmee - 3/4/08
« on: March 04, 2008, 12:23:55 pm »
Found the game on Dish channel 451... tuned in just in time to see Roy's first pitch of the game:  a solo home run by Pudge.

Inning didn't get much better from there.  Tigers up 3-0 after 1 inning, hopefully Roy can settle down here as we start the 2nd.

Oswalt looked a lot better in the 2nd inning...

Can't say the same about our bats.  Through 2 innings, our only hit is a dribbler down the third base line by Kablong.

3-0 DET, going into the 3rd.

Smoothly turned DP hardly makes up for it, but at least no more blood was shed.

Still 4-0 heading to the bottom of the 3rd.  Is that it for Roy today, y'all think?  Didn't get a pitch count, but JD and Brownie speculated he probably wouldn't be pushed past 50.

JR Towles TIES the game at 6 with a rain-making 3-run homer to the lf corner.

All runs this inning against Todd Jones.

6-6, Astros still batting in the 4th.

Astros took the lead by a run in the bottom of the 5th, I think Lee drove in Tejada.

Astros then scored 2 more in the bottom of the 6th, but should have had more as a DP ended it.  Berkman walked in the 6th, and then begged to be taken out, even acting like his hammy suddenly got hurt (AFTER getting to 1st), Bourn was sent to run for him.

Now that I am listening, I will try to give you better updates, but after 6, Astros up 9-6.

Larish batting - s-b(Sizemore steals 2nd)-sc(just above knees)-grounder to Bork, Larish is out, Sizemore to 3rd.
Ordonez still batting - chopper to left size, Perez comes up with it and throws him out, but run scores.
Holloman batting - s-b-grounder to Niekro to end the inning

1 hit, 1 Run

McBride pitching for Tiggers

Abercrombie rips the first pitch for a lead off double
Ramirez batting - f(down first base side)-f(back, was high)-b(just off outside corner)-Ked swinging (Abercrombie stole 3rd).  Swung at high pitch.  Abercrombie took a walking lead to get SB.
Towles - b(high)-double for his 3rd xtra-base hit today.  4th RBI as Abercrombie scores.
Newhan - f(swung hard)-blistered to CF - Towles advances on aggressive (but smart) play
Manzella - b(way high)-ripped into LF, Towles in to score, RBI single
Perez - b(breaker down)-b(big breaker, low and in)-chopper down 3B line, throws him out.  Ends inning

Muecke in the pen

Astros 11 - Tiggers 7 After 7

Muecke in to pitch the 8th

Santiago batting - b(??? milo calling)-b(outside)-double to straight away left.  Wind pushed ball past Diaz (who is playing left)
Ramirez batting - ss(big rip at a sharp breaker)-ss(Milo just butchered Annette Funicello last name)-b(???)-b(tight at knees, just found out I missed a pitch)-(Joe West is home ump)- HIGH drive to left, 2-Run HR.  Ramirez races around the bases.  Ball was crushed.
Thomas - Struck out swinging (I think on 3 pitches, but only heard 1 or two called)
Guzman - b-(Milo makes joke that Skelton, the kid on deck, should be skeleton because he is so thin)b-s-line drive single to RF
Skelton - sc(pulled back bunt attempt)-(throw to 1b, not close)-looping liner to CF, single, runners 1st and 2nd.  Muecke not fooling anyone, Robinson goes to talk to him.
Sizemore batting - b(down)-sc(at the knees, inside corner)-b(Guzman steals 3rd 100% off Muecke)-base hit to CF, drives in 10th run and 16th hit for Tigers. (Astros have 17 hits) Runners at 1st and 2nd
Larish - b(down and out)-sc(right on hands, inside corner)-slow roller to 2B, too slow for DP, runners advance, but 2nd out made.

Pulling Muecke for Geary coming in to pitch.
Milo and Brett talking about having to weed out the 28 pitchers, because there are too many to really give all of them enough IP.

Trzesniak batting - Popped up for the final out.

Astros 11 - Tiggers 10  Middle of 8th

Beltran pitching for Tigers.  Big 6'6" righty.

Diaz - b(ball thrown to backstop)-b(up and in)-b(baaaaaaalll three!)-b(way high) BB to lead off
House - (Milo making really bad jokes about his last name)sc(after long delay looking at Diaz)-b(up and in)-ss-smash foul down left side(seems Milo has a beard going and Brad's Mom told him he needs to shave it)-b(way high)-Beltran steps off-sc; House watched a good pitch go by, 1 out.
Niekro - b(pitch-out, Milo is talking about HR Niekro hit yesterday that was ruled foul)-s(???)-foul(to right side)-ss, ked, but Diaz steals 2nd.
Abercrombie - b-b-b(up and out)-sc(at knees on inside corner)-b(around shins) another BB.
Ramirez - pop up to 3B, final out of the 8th

Astros 11 - Tiggers 10  After 8 innings

Geary staying in for the 9th

Hollimon batting - looper to LF, for a base-hit
Santiago batting - shot to 2B, flip and fire for a DP!  Newhan made a good play to control it and flip to Manzella
Ramirez batting - sc-chopper to SS, comes hard, SAFE at 1B, 2 hopper allows very fast runner to reach, it was VERY close though.
Thomas batting - throw to 1b, not close-b(down and out)-another throw to 1b, close this time-bouncer foul down right side-throw to 1b, runner dives back safely-fly ball to LF, ground rule double.  Run cannot score (saved a run).  Runners 2nd and 3rd now.
Guzman batting - s-pop out to SS, Manzella got it.

ASTROS WIN!!!

Astros 11 - Tigers 10    ---- FINAL

Final scoreboard:

Tigers 10 19 0
Astros 11 17 2

Astros notibles:
Towles 3-3, 3-Run HR, 3 runs scored, 4 RBIs
Erstad 2-3, 1 run scored, and threw a runner out at plate from RF
Lee 2-2, 1BB, RBI and Run scored
Each spot in line-up scored a run except 2-spot where Loretta and Mazella both had RBIs.

Erstad was player interviewed after the game.
Thinks transition to team is easy because of the quality guys in club house here.
Thinks transition to NL won't be issue, because he has played in most NL parks anyway (inter-league play).
Not much of value added in interview.

If you are asking about his "injury" he was DHing today and got walked, and didn't want to have to run the bases should that be required, so he asked the dug out to replace him.  I am guessing he then started acting like he pulled his hammy to "encourage" them to replace him.  I think it was just his way of asking out of the game.  I doubt it looked like anything other than a veteran doing a BAD acting job as humor.  Based on how Milo and Brett talked about it, it was a joke by Berkman to help get him out of the game before he had to run the bases.  He scored from 1B earlier in the game, from what they said, so there is no injury.

It was him screwing around to get pulled.

Having watched Muecke the last couple of years at AA, I'm not convinced he's going to stick in the bigs (he should be at Round Rock this year).  His stuff never seemed all that good to me, and although he seems to know how to get the best from his ability he appears to me to be a AAAA type player.  Though as a lefty he'll obviously get a ton of looks for quite some time and likely from more than one team.
Goin' for a bus ride.

Teach me to worry about the slacker. That's the kind of spring training Michael Bourn aspires to have one day.

Saw two stolen bases on towles in the box score.  Were they stolen off him or the pitcher?  How close were they?

I cannot acurately vouch for either one as I was listening and not watching.  Based on what was said, the 2nd one was totally on the pitcher.  The 1st, I don't recall clearly enough, but don't think they said one way or another, but it was a speedy type guy.
