Bedard to Mariners
« on: February 08, 2008, 02:42:30 pm »
For Adam Jones, a reliever, and three starting prospects.  Read all about it here.

The story ends with this amusing typo:
Quote
Tillman, 19, was Seattle's minor-league pitcher of the year in 2007. Neither Tillman, Butler or Mickolio were on the Mariners' 0-man roster.

Now, that's some cost-cutting!

I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

According to the "experts" Balt got more for Bedard than the Twins got for Santanna.  Not sure how you really rate that given the uncertain nature of prospects.  But I have heard that Jones is better than anything the Twins got, plus the potential in the other players as well. FWIW

Don't forget that Bedard is under club control for 2 seasons (vs. one for Santana) and will be cheaper for the first season and probably the 2nd as well.  That adds value to Bedard.

True, but Santanna has a MUCH better track record of success.  Bedard basically broke through last year.  Santanna has been doing his best "Best Pitcher in Baseball" trick for 3+ years.

But I do understand where you are comming from, still think Minn got the short end of the stick.  But from what I have heard that is more because they got too greedy, and should have taken some of the earlier offers.  If you believe the rumor the Red Sox had at one time the best offer on the table, but pulled it off because the Twins asked for more.

Plus, being able to offer the huge contract was a prerequisite to even negotiating in the Santana deal.

The difference was that Santana held the Twins by the short and curlies the week leading up to that trade when he said they have to trade me now or they can get get nothing now and wait until free agency.  The mistake that the Twins may have made was waiting too long to pull the trigger on a Santana deal.  Hindsight is 20/20 though.

The Orioles on the other had had much more leverage as Bedard didn't have a no-trade clause, in addition to having an extra year under contract.

Yes, the no-trade clause was huge.

Will the Mariners end up being hoisted by their own Bedard?

Don't encourage him.
