Astros trivia - the RBI void
« on: January 31, 2008, 10:30:40 am »
This question was posed by my ol' buddy Wild Dog, and with his permission I thought I would share. The results surprised me.

What hitter in Astros history went the most consecutive games (minimum two at bats to eliminate pinch hitters) without driving in a run?

I could have sworn I saw him in Vegas last summer. Many times in fact.

We were sitting there having some terrible food, when an Elvis track came on the radio.  Then, coinkydinkally, a man bearing a strong and deliberate resemblance to Elvis walked in the door.

Spooky, it was.

Then he proceeded to bogart all the syrup.

No to both.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

From July 17th to August 23rd, 2007, Loretta went 31 games without an RBI. He had 117 at bats in the streak.

Think Tal would want this info for Feb. 18th?

Good job Limey!

What about the ML record? (Limited to the last 50 years)

Rey Ordonez.

In fact, both of the bonus question answers were shortstop who later went on to become managers.

As a sort of honorable mention to this, in 1971 Padres SS Enzo Hernandez was allowed 549 official at bats (by Preston Gomez), and yet somehow managed to drive in only 12 runs.  Twelve.

The Link

A pretty remarkable feat by itself, and during that season he had separate streaks of 32, 24, and 21 games without an RBI.  In 1971, Enzo Hernandez was a non-RBI machine.

(Luis Castillo, then of FLA, challenged Hernandez' record in 2000, but screwed it up at the end, and ended up with 17 RBIs in 539 ABs.  No real long streaks in there, though;  Castillo spaced his RBIs out evenly.  He did manage to go the first 18 games of the season without driving in a run, whihc may be a record for an everyday player, I don't know.)

In the last 50 seasons, the answer is a former Astro who is mentioned in this very thread who had a 27 game streak to start a season.

Julio  Lugo?

No. He was part of a young Astros DP duo. The other member of the pair is a Hall of Famer.

Of course. He began the '66 season by not driving in a run until May 13th, a streak of 27 games with 31 hits in 105 at bats.
