Somebody's going to emergency...
« on: January 04, 2008, 04:03:17 pm »
...somebody's going to jail:

Clemens, McNamee called to testify before Congress

I'll be impressed if Roger doesn't perjure himself.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

As has been pointed out in many articles, McNamee has been operating under a plea bargain that keeps him out of jail only if he tells the truth.  This includes what he told Mitchell.  If he lied, he could go to jail.

In front of Congress, the playing field will be even for McNamee and Clemens for the first time.  If what McNamee says is true, Clemens doesn't like a level playing field.

If the congressional panel convenes under the same circumstances as the 2005 one ("I am not here to speak about the past" "I have never used steroids. Period." "No hablo ingles") than nobody is going to jail.

2005 wasn't an election year...

Did anything ever happen to R. Palmeiro following his testimony?

Prediction time!!!

Take a stab at what Clemens next step will be.  I said earlier this week that I bet the full press conference on Monday never happens.  So, my prediction is that we'll hear from Hardin Monday morning that Clemens is cancelling the press conference out of respect for the request from congress.  He'll then deny the request.

Nothing.  Nothing ever again.  (Suspended 10 games, Link appeared in 110 games for Baltimore in 2005, pariah in 06 and is now trying to get picked up by any body who will have him.)

The "testimony" at that "hearing" was not made under the pains and penalties of perjury.

I bet they cut the same deal that McGwire and others did and say just about nothing of worth.  And the band played on.

Seriously, is this a circus or what?  Have we not learned from history that we keep repeating it over and over and over again?

Still a crime to lie in a congressional hearing.  Not many people are called on that though.

Much better to simply not recall.

That is why you don't lie and you say what McGwire said... nothing.

Well, I think he cost himself any shot at election to the HOF, rightly or wrongly.  Which, given his (inflated?) stats - 500+ HRs, 3000+ hits for starters - he probably would have sailed through the process otherwise, rightly or wrongly.  Of course, there are enough dumb sportswriters out there that. . . who knows?

The response from Clemens' camp to Congress' invitation recently shown on Sportscenter said basically he acknowledges the invitation and will shortly get back to them after checking his schedule, he has a charitable golf event on the January 16th the day of and I'm sure this is where he will be.

That's true.  What I was trying to say was that after he confessed, baseball ignored him.

I guess all I can think at this point is:  "Our congressmen (and women) don't have anything better to do than this?!?!"  Just love seeing my tax dollars paying for them to do nothing AGAIN!

The worst part is, how much coverage this (what will in reality be) non-story will get.  Just like the huge coverage of the Iowa voting this past week.  Tons of coverage leading up to something that might have little impact on the rest of the nominations.  It isn't like the 2nd and 3rd place people from either party are packing it in after it.

Just more reason to avoid major news networks for the next 9 months.
