Who is Garner Protecting?
« on: December 13, 2007, 02:48:15 pm »
From page 76 of the Mitchell Report (124 of PDF file):
Quote
Similarly, in an article that appeared in early August, days before stories first
appeared about Mark McGwire’s use of androstenedione, then-Milwaukee Brewers manager Phil
Garner told a reporter of his first-hand knowledge of a player’s steroid use:

There was one kid, 27, who was cycling steroids, and I asked him, ‘Do
you realize you could need an artificial heart when you’re 40 years
old?’. . . He said, ‘I don’t care what happens at 40. All I want to do is be
the biggest, baddest, guy I can be right now.’

In his interview with our investigation, Garner acknowledged that he had known one major
league player who used steroids while playing for him, but Garner refused to identify the player
because it was more than five years prior to the interview and Garner did not believe it was
necessary for this investigation to look that far back in time.

Could it be Julio Franco (1997 Brewers)?

Wasn't Julio Franco 48 in 1997?

Just kidding, of course.  He was 39 though, according to his listed DOB of 8/23/58... well over 27.

Geoff Jenkins?

23 in 1997, and not on MIL yet.

Around 27, on the 1997 MIL roster:

Dave Nilsson
Fernando Vina
Jeff Cirillo
Jose Valentin
Jeromy Burnitz
Kelly Stinnett
Ron Villone
Bryce Florie
Angel Miranda
Mike Misuraca

I say "around" because I'm not sure how b-r.com calculates age, and at what point that player was supposed to be 27... these are the 27-28 year olds.

Wasn't Ron Villone named elsewhere in the report? Could be him.

Am I the only one for whom the name Burnitz leaped off the page?

I was wondering if he will be let go after this. Likewise Justice on YES.

Seems to me they're one and the same, hence the report's reference to those specific Garner quotes.

Does it actually say, though, that Garner had this conversation with the player in 1997? Could it have been earlier?

Out of that list there are two named in the report (vina, villone), but Burnitz jumped out as well.

In the report Villone paid in cash and seemed to be more covert about things. Vina never was or could be the biggest or baddest ass at anything. Vina probably started after Albert Belle cracked him Chuck Zito style.

So I'd say Burnitz.

Cirillo is my vote.  had a good year in 96 than started tailing off esp. in power despite moving to Coor's field.

No, Garner said that the incidnet occurred over 5 years ago, so it could be anybody between his time w/ the Brewers or Tigers ('92 - '02).
