When I saw "Leach Embarrassed", I thought it was something to do with the only known TZer to throw out a first pitch.

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

David Lakey was re-assigned by GM Gerry Hunsicker because of a difference of opinion on the value of Chris Burke.  Soon afterwards, Lakey quit.

That begs the question, who was on which side of that argument?

some scout (Lakey, Noe?) assured Hun before the draft that Burke could play SS.

So Lakey was thrown to the proverbial dog-house because he claimed Burke could play ML SS, and Hunsicker found out that was WAY off base, and after not liking the dog-house, Lakey later resigned.

Is that an accurate time-line then?

ok, I can live with that.  My experience is that when there is a falling out between people, there is ALWAYS fault on both sides.

David was on record at the time that Burke could play ss.  IIRC, his opinion was not widely shared in baseball.  Trouble is that although he was wrong on that, Hun went after speed in that draft.  At the 10 spot Burke was about it for speed.  Otherwise it would have been a pitcher.  And, that draft was so bad I don't believe any pitcher drafted with the next 3 or 4 panned out.

My bad.

BTW - the fallout was also about Burke as a first round pick.  The opinion around baseball at the time was that Burke in the first round was a "reach".  If Hun was sure he could play shortstop, he was then okay with it being a first rounder because of the offensive promise.  Burke quickly proved he was not a shortstop, had limited offensive skills and had to spend time in Instructional League after a stint in AA to relearn how to hit a baseball.  All of which made Hunsicker very annoyed at the whole matter.

But David Lakey was a great leader of the scouting group and his issue with the Hun wasn't entirely about Burke.  It was about how the Hun kept the scouting group and the baseball operations side shut out from the entire organization.  Hun basically kept much of them away and would not allow for fraternization with the other operations groups, like marketing and PR (business) with his baseball men.  Many of them felt they were not being recognized for their work, Dewey Robinson (now the pitching coach on Cecil Cooper's staff) being one of them.  Lakey being another.

That was one of the worst drafts as far as overall talent goes ever.  In a good year, Burke is a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

Doesn't matter though.  If not Burke they were going to take pitcher Kenny Baugh.  He's well on his way to being a career minor leaguer.
