Shiner 97, renamed Shiner Bohemian Black Lager, is hitting distributors this week and should be available at bars and retailers as early as this weekend, at least in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Other areas will follow.

No shit.  That's some damn good stuff.

I know this fella from the panhandle who used to talk about driving up there all the time.....maybe I could get him to go through with it "on accounst of" the beer....and bring us some back.  Wait, he works for Cessna out of St. Louis now.  Wonder how much brew he could pile into a Citation X?  Fast as those things are he could make a couple of trips.

Somebody figure out a way to get a Senator Stevens boondoggle on this one.....STAT!

Grapevine Market off Shoal Creek in Austin has some.  I just picked a bit up.  I'm looking forward to trying it, as I missed it the first time around.

Is it possible that we go ahead and name Spoetzl Brewery as the Official Brewer of the TalkZone?  Well done, sir.

Shiner has long been the official beer of the TZ.  The 2005 WS went to shit and never recovered when Roeder's ran out during the extra innings of Game #1.

It's powerful medicine, and the main ingredient of Orange Whoopass.

That was definately the turning point, also Neil leaving, which might be a coincidence but sometimes I fear a much more subversive hand was at play that night.

For some reason I thought that was Game 2. Neil left, promptly followed by Qualls and Wheeler conspiring to give up four runs in the seventh. In the ninth, you had just refilled your beer when Podsednik hit the unlikely winner. "But I just got a new beer! That wasn't supposed to happen!" At least, that's how I remember the night going down, though not at all too strange it would be if my memory captured the wrong night altogether. Between the bar running out of Shiner and the Astros loss, my psyche suffered greatly that night.

That's great to hear.  I'd been making due with Sam Adams Black Lager, which I found to be very similar.

One of my many tasks this offseason is to compile a list and links to various "official" OWA sponsorhips.  Things such as "Official Beer", "Official Song", "Official Band", and "Official Bar".  I've just got to convince pravata that D.H. Lawrence is NOT the "Official Author".

I thought that was Shakespeare.  Or, at least, Henry Vee is the Official Play.

Also, went to my local Spec's (on 290) and they knew nothing about the Bavarian Black Lager.  They did know enough to tell me (condescendingly) that it was a limited run last year.  I bought a case of '98 just for the hell of it.

I can't remember why I left.  It can't have been a good enough reason.  Damn.

Sam Adams makes some fine beers to be sure. But keep this in mind, for what it's worth: Just like it has for the past 98 years, every drop of Shiner beer is brewed by only 55 dedicated, beer-loving people at the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, TX, population 2,070.

Sam Adams, on the other hand, is largely contract brewed by several different breweries. And the "Boston" Beer Company (founded in 1985, although founder Jim Koch has deep brewing roots) is actually based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Now I'm admittedly biased, and while I strongly urge everyone to drink Shiner (two a day, please), if you'd rather not, then at least drink beer from one of America's many great small craft breweries.

Nobody knows anything about bavarian black lager ... they make some good beer in bavaria, but the black lager style is bohemian (aka Czech).

If anyone is down in South Austin, I just called the Brodie Spec's, and they won't be getting it until the end of the month. But the upstanding gentleman on the phone did say that he'd seen it at the HEB on Slaughter (Circle C).

For those who can use the info, the Kroger on Kirby & South Main in Houston has a decent supply of Shiner 98.
