Three questions, is there a reason Gutierrez is not pitching ... injured? or is he just taking the winter off. 

This guy Middleton... is he under the Astros control for 2008? Any idea where he will be during the season. I know he relieved in 2007, but previously and this winter he has started.

Marc Saccomanno – Magallanes – Is batting .253 through 26 games.  He has 2 HR, 3 doubles and 14 RBI.  He has K’d 17 out of 79 AB. Hasn’t played since Dec. 1.
Wlad Sutil – Magallanes – Appeared in 2 games and was hitless in 5 AB with 2 Ks and has a caught stealing. Hasn’t played since Oct. 17th.
Felipe Paulino - Bravos de Margarita – Has now pitched 6 games (19 2/3 innings) 7 earned runs , 20 hits (1 HR), 16 walk and 19 Ks. ERA 3.20. Has had 15 walks in his last 14 IP.
Enyelbert Soto - Bravos de Margarita – Has not played
Humberto Quintero – Aguilas de Zulia – Has not played, on reserve list

This is a bit of a concern ... is it a new injury, or is he just being held onto by the Caribes in a VWL analogue to the 60-day DL?

Here is the latest on his injury from Footer:

Nieve had Tommy John surgery at the end of April last year. The recovery time is 12-18 months and as we saw with Brandon Backe, even the quickest healers usually need the full 18 to regain arm strength, control and confidence. That said, Nieve's rehab is going well and an early return, perhaps May of this year, isn't out of the question.

Knew he had had surgery but had forgotten just when he had it so this give us a time frame for when he will start pitching again.

Start pitching again and being ready to pitch again are not the same thing (for those who might not know the difference).

While I expect Backe to be back this year, anything he did last year I chalked up to just "getting back".  With Nieve since he had so little ML experience prior to the injury, I would hope that the team keeps him in AAA all year (or most of it) if possible.
