In that audio interview Justice did with McLane, I thought Drayton mentioned just how impressed he was with the Twins.  IIRC, he specifically mentioned them signing picks and winning with a reasonable budget.

At any rate, I am curious if Drayton calls him in.  I'm just trying to get a feel whether Drayton has real opinions of his own, or is just usually parroting things he heard elsewhere, or spouting after-the-fact crap to support his decisions.  In other words, if he really was impressed with the Twins, and he reached that conclusion on his own volition, it would seem natural to at least interview the man.

If Drayton says he's impressed, it's with the Twins books.

Oh, that settles it, then. Ryan's resigning because he's already accepted the job here.

why is Ryan resigning?

My theory:
Pohliad (sp?) won't pay Santana, Hunter, Morneau, etc.

I think the Twins would love to pay Santana, but he wants out because he's fed up with their payroll.  I heard on the radio that Ryan was starting to catch heat for the probable departures that are going to happen this offseason.  It's completely ridiculous, but it might work out well for us.

Sure, why not.  I remember that Gerry Hunsicker was kept on as an advisor with the Astros.  That lasted about a year.  I think the only thing he advised them was to stay the hell away from him.

Now see, that's just unfair.  We were going to give up 2 unproven AAA arms, too.  That made it a sensible deal for the Twins.

Justice weighed in on Ryan on his blog.  He seems to think that if Ryan leaves Minnesota, he'll go to Balmer to be with Andy McPhail.  He also said that, even though the 'stros said today that interviews were over, the team would be placing a call to Ryan.

We get it, Justice: you used to work in the DC area and you're friends with everyone there.  Congrats.

Now, why you make me go read Pinwheel again?  Here's what he writes, "I'm certain Tal Smith will give him a call," The only way he's certain is if Polly Prissy Pants tells him.  Because he sure hasn't spoken with anyone connected with the Astros.

As for the nominations being closed, here's what Smith has said,

(Thursday) "At the moment, there are no other interviews scheduled," said Astros president of baseball operations Tal Smith, who sat in on the interviews with owner Drayton McLane and consultant Bob McLaren. "We're sitting down now to discuss where we're at."
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/sports/5132581.html

(on Wednesday)
Additionally, the Astros have not officially decided that the pool of candidates will be cut off at 11.
"We'll discuss that (Thursday)," Smith said. "It's also a possibility that someone will throw another name in the mix that we think is worthwhile to interview."
http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070912&content_id=2204594&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou

So, there's still a chance they'll do a fly by with some other names.  Last week they said they had 30 emails from people asking for interviews.  No doubt they have whole sacks full of names by now.  Maybe enough to save Santa from going to jail.

The surprising resignation of Twins GM Terry Ryan created somewhat of a buzz at Minute Maid Park, but it's highly unlikely he will express interest in the Astros' opening. According to published reports, Ryan will assume an advisory role with the Twins and will concentrate on scouting.

"I read the announcements," Smith said. "It seems to me like he wants to relinquish the role and get back to the fun part of the game."

i think santana initially started to chirp when they traded luis castillo, on of his buddies, to the stem in July.  i think the money issues naturally mushroomed from there.

"I read the announcements," and "It seems to me ..."  to me sounds like they probably wont pursue Ryan.  Justice's certainty is just as half-baked as when he told his pal Ringolsby that Randy Smith was being set up as the new GM.  Richard Justice has as much access to the Astros as I do.  Footer calls any interest "unlikely" Link

Drayton was just on the broadcast with Milo.  Was asked about Terry Ryan.  Paraphrased...

Tal looked into it.

Ryan is mentally tired.

Ryan is also close to the Pohlad family, so the Twins told us clearly that he will be a special executive and complete his career in Minnesota.

Nothing particularly new or groundbreaking, but I figured that since I was listening anyway I might as well document this for future reference.

McLane also hinted that they were very close to making an announcement RE: the GM, saying something like they were going to move well before the season was over.

There are two weeks left in the season. If he speaks the truth, they must have their guy picked out because there isn't time for second interviews.

Why can't they do second interviews with a few guys in two weeks? On the other hand, I don't see what the rush is to do it "well before" then.

If they don't announce before the end of the season, they'll be subject to Bud's "gag order" about announcements overshadowing post-season play. And we already know that Drayton listens to Bud.

I really don't think that would apply in terms of naming a GM. A team needs a GM to start planning their offseason strategy.
