I am not a connoisseur of Greek food. Having said that...

I FUCKING love Greek food. There is only one joint, well off of the beaten trail, that serves up bad ass Greek fare in San Antonio.
It closes at 8PM most nights and is diametrically opposite of where I live/work in town. Therefore, when I am so driven to enjoy such a meal, given their closing hour, I drive as fast as I can to accomodate that urge. My kids are on the same page as am I, and love to participate in that flight as well. Good Greek is Good Feed.

That said, I cannot wait to check out some of these suggestions the next time I visit HoustoN. Thanks.

Niko Nikos is pretty good food, but the service and the general attitude of the owners/staff is atrocious. Not to mention being packed in the place like sardines.

Cafe Lili is a great recommendation. Just the opposite of Nikos. Food is excellent and so is the service. Lili or her son are always in the restaurant overseeing things. Always top-notch.

Greek friends say Mykonos is good, but I haven't been there. I like the Dimassis chain for Lebanese(?). The Greek festival is the first weekend in October, and Thursday night is family night.

Istanbul Grill is good.

Yes, Annunciation's festival is in October and you can find better food there than you can at most of the restaurants. St. Basil's festival was about a month ago. Good food there, too.

For what it's worth, I've never had bad service or felt any attitude at Niko Nikos. But it is preternaturally busy.

Niko Niko's is fantastic. Tought to get a parking spot, and always busy, but I've never had bad service.

I've been to Mykonos many times, and it used to be fantastic. But a friend of mine who used to lunch there every Tuesday (the guy likes routines) told me a few months back that the owner finally retired, and it went downhill fast. I haven't been back to make sure.

I got to know Demo and his sister who ran the joint back around the time Mike Scott no-hit the Giants for the pennant. They are truly good people. Their restaurant was, and is, very well regarded. Demo is long gone, having moved to California in the early '90s, but his sister has carried on, opening up two more locations in town. Back then, I thought their food was great, and it hasn't changed a bit. Now, however, there are a few more places around town to compare to Demos. For my palate, Mina and Dimi's by Wilfred Hall Hospital on the west side is truly the shit....for SA. John the Greek's is a close second. Demo's is third.

There used to be a place off of St. Mary's close to IH 37, or close to that area. I don't remember the name of it though.

We go to Niko Niko's when we want greek- maybe 1 time a month or so.

The parking does indeed suck- even if you are just doing carry out (I don't think they have to go parking).

We usually end up parking 2 or 3 blocks away behind an apartment complex, as that lot is always full- and even when you find a spot you take your life into your own hands trying to get into and out of.

Service has always been friendly enough. I like the food- don't love it like Mexican food or anything, but am always agreeable any time the wife mentions it as a place to go.

looks like i somehow missed this discussion from earlier in the week, but please allow me to add my two cents

cafe lily has won my undying loyalty for three simple reasons:

consistently fabulous greek (lebanese) food in a laid-back atmosphere
beer = cold
astros game on tv without having to ask lily to put down the hookah and pass you the remote control

Try Darband's Shishkabob on Hillcroft near the Westpark Tollway for great Persian. Very very reasonable prices too. Turkish Empire, Memorial at Benignus, isn't bad, but it's a bit pricey. For Greek, I agree with the others here on Niko Niko's or Biba's.
