Brewers get Linebrink

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Good, let them clear out their minors for awhile.

Doesn't that seem like a lot to give up for a middle reliever?  I don't know anything about the prospects the Padres got, but it's still a three for one deal.  Also, Linebrink had just been demoted from his setup role because of an alarming recent streak of giving up three run HRs.  If this is what the market for relievers is like, Purpura may well get an offer for one of our guys that he feels like he can't refuse.

It seems odd that a team contending for its division would trade away a middle reliever with a good track record for minor league arms.

Hadn't thought of it from that perspective, but you have a good point.  Linebrink will be a free agent after this season, so I'm guessing the Padres looked at the deal as too good to pass up.  Maybe Linebrink fell out of favor with new manager/former pitching coach Bud Black?

The guys they traded were the #3, #23 and #27 prospects in the Milwaukee organization I believe.  Will Inman, the #3 guy was behind only Braun and Gallardo.

Maybe the Padres know something that MIL doesn't...like how those three run dingers keep the other team from covering the spread.

From Padres' GM Kevin Towers:

"Thatcher is the one guy we hope will help us," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. "It's an acquisition similar to the one we made last year when we got Cla Meredith. He hasn't had a chance yet, but has a tremendous strikeout-to-walk ratio and gets left-handers and right-handers out.

"We had two or three clubs that came at us hard for Linebrink. Unless it was an overwhelming deal we couldn't turn our head on, we would certainly consider it."

Maybe the Padres think they'll be able to get another setup guy who is still under control from some other trading partner. Maybe even in a combo deal with a second baseman. And they might be able to get those guys by trading a passel of pitchers. Maybe.

On a serious note...this is the kind of deal you see when clubs (MIL in this case) think they have a realistic chance at going deep into the playoffs.  It's also an example of why I continue to worry that the Astros still might trade Lidge.  I keep looking at the Tigers and Maybin (did I get it right...is this the stud CF prospect?).  Granderson's playing out of his mind right now and I'm pretty sure he's still got a year or two of club controlled years left.  When push comes to shove...I have to believe that Lidge just might be the missing link for that team winning the WSeries.  If Detriot's GM ends up thinking the same thing...

Its a sign the Padres wanna trade another team's prospects instead of their own when they make one or two more deals for hitting before the deadline. Their bullpen is stocked with great arms so he's expendable.

Linebrink was around a 3.5 ERA in Petco going against NL West offenses last year and this year he's at 3.90.    I think the Padres definitely got the better end of the deal, as there is no guarantee a 30 yr old middle reliever is going to turn things around after an off year and a half.

Linebrink is also a FA at the end of the year, whereas Qualls and Wheeler both have until at least the end of 2008. Wheeler's stats for this year (everybody knows how good he's been the last few) actually look better than Linebrink's. Wheels has the high ERA but a very solid WHIP (1.19) and he's struck out 10 per 9 innings. Then you've got Qualls, who, as others here have mentioned, could potentially have more trade value than Wheeler, because he's got better "stuff." Personally I guess I'm hoping Wheels stays.

I just don't think Drayton will tell the Spanish Purple to trade a fan favorite who is performing at such a high level.  Hell, it took 18 months of crappy pitching to finally twist him arm on trading Jose Lima.
