Wow. Obviously not totally unexpected, but feels a bit weird to see it in writing nonetheless. I will definitely have to be at the games at Shea in September.

He certainly deserves it, but him wanting to catch an inning of that last game kind of makes me cringe.

Needless to say, I will be there.

I remember him saying the he'd want to go out playing an inning at every postion he'd ever played in the majors...guess he said the hell with playing the OF.

He should just take the tour... An inning at each position. And if the Good Guys are getting whomped, let him pitch the 9th.

This announcement was  basically a foregone conclusion, but damn if I'm not all teary-eyed and shit. Mr. Astro will be sorely, sorely missed.

I think that the whole announcing when he is going to play is a little strange, although it is good for fans who are only going to go see Biggio play.

Congratulations to Biggio -- on getting his 3,000th hit.  And on putting a cap to a great career.
Boom!

How good does it feel to know you got to witness not one but two outstanding careers.  I feel so much better that this will not go down like Bagwell's.  It was a shame that Jeff didn't get to make the "tour" like Pigpen.  The best part of the "tour" is that we know that he's doing it all for the fans, for that "last time" opportunity for kids of all ages.  Hell, if he does put the gear on for that last inning, that will even make me feel all mushy and stuff.

I don't think Biggio would be a good manager.  Involved in player personnel but not a manager.

This may be blasphemy but I wonder about the timing of his announcement in relation to the trading deadline.  Not that they were thinking about trading him but about trading Burke and said Craig what are your plans because they impact our plans.

he undermined one manager, and i doubt he'd be a good fit. some sort of personal services deal? bench coach for someone he respects?

"Busch Stadium in St. Louis and Wrigley Field in Chicago are especially dear to Biggio, who has played in more than 100 games in each, more than any other ballpark he's visited in his career."

Dan Wheeler's wrecking ball and those drunk turdinal fans would disagree with that statement...

Also, re: ending his career at catcher, it would be interesting to see how he handles Lidge's sliders in the dirt.

Or maybe a base coach.  Nothing against Cheo, but having Bidge waiting at 1B for you might get some of these lollygaggers to run the line every once in a while.

Wait... What does Biggio being around have to do with Burke?  Just because Biggio isn't going to be the 2B in 08 doesn't mean Burke is.  I think it just means they need to trade for or sign a FA 2B for next year.

mentioned 3K as a bigger moment than making it to the World Series.  i have heard players before say they would trade any personal milestone for a chance at the World Series.

Biggio did both.  He can pick which one is bigger.  Maybe if they'd won the series...

He made a crack about being in the car on the way to one of the kids games and being able to laugh at them for missing the sliders low and away instead of the other way around for once.

Respect the Braves?!?! NEVER!!!!  I say the Astros do unto them as they did unto... ahum... them!  Last year the Braves made the last series with Houston their playoffs (or so they said).  That kept Houston from a virtual tie with St. Louie for the division.  I say that Houston pay back Atlanta by trotting out all their best... errr.... worse and for Houston fans to do the tomahawk chop just like the St. Louis fans did late last year in tribute.  This while handing the steMs the division outright if possible.

This would be reverse tribute!  Stick this tomahawk youknowhere!

either way--kudos, Bidge.  thanks for a memorable 20 years.

Wow, I knew it was coming, but I still cried when I watched him say it.  What a classy guy.  I will miss him so much.  I respect his desire to spend time with his family while his kids are still at home.  But I hope he finds a visible role with the team soon.

The younger players had better carry on the legacy of Bidge and Bags.  AE can't come back soon enough for me.
