Lasik surgery (non-BB)
« on: July 11, 2007, 10:55:04 am »
I've decided to get lasik surgery to correct my vision and to get out of the problems I had wearing contacts.  I'm going in tomorrow morning for the procedure and have already heard the spiel from the Doctor's.  Has anyone here had the surgery?  I'd just like to get an idea of what to expect.

Not a huge deal. I was very nearsighted, and could not wear contacts. I see quite well now.

Please note this will not fix presbyopia (spelling?? needing reading glasses after 40).

I'd be interested in hearing people's comments/experiences on this, because Mrs Limey is thinking about taking the plunge on eye surgery.

Berkley Eye Center advertises that they have a fix for this too now.

The not-so-fine print says it's only for cataract patients though.

I had the surgery and it was fine.  They didn't hit one of my eyes enough and I had to go back for a touch up about 3 months later (no charge to me).  I went from about 20/400 to about 20/15.  Your eyes are a little itchy for a few days afterwards, and you get to put tons of drops in them.  I am glad I had it done.

I'd like to have it done.  I've had a friend who did it and it turned out fine.  I'm worried they'll accidentally burn out my eye balls though  There's a website where people who had problems during or after the surgery post their stories.  It scared the crap out of me.  The mishaps on that site range in severity from annoyances like ghosting or dry eyes, to people who are almost blind now because of it.  After I visted that website, I changed my mind.  It would probably go fine and my vision would be great, but I don't want to risk it.  I have great vision with glasses (it was 20-15 the last time I had it checked).  I've been wearing them for so long, I don't even notice them anymore.

If you're a professional hitter, I have documented proof that the surgery will not prevent you from pulling at the contacts that you no longer wear between pitches.

If you believe you're playing well because you're pulling at non-existent contacts, or because you're not pulling at non-existent contacts, or because you wear women's underwear, then you ARE! And you should know that!

My little sister had it earlier this year.  The pain immediately afterwards was pretty intense (hours, not days), and she was so sensitive to light (again just hours) that she closed herself up in a pitch black closet.  Other than that, recovery sounded okay.  Someday I might get the nerve to go get it done, but right now I'm sticking to glasses.

I had it done a little more than 3 years ago and went from @ 20/800 to 20/15.

My glasses/contacts never corrected my eyesight to better than 20/30 which was the optometrist's explanation for my week of tripping over curbs, knocking over water glasses, burning myself on the stove and iron, and falling down a flight of marble stairs - apparently my brain had gotten used to compensating and took awhile to adapt (this is extremely rare, but I know I would have appreciated a warning). Except for that rather painful week, I've not had any problems.

My vision is somewhere between 20/600 and 20/800, so obviously LASIK is always something I've wanted done.  In the past, my eye doctor has recommended that I wait until after turning 25 to have it done.  I turn 25 later this year, so it'll be on like Donkey Kong.

The FDA's LASIK site seems to have a lot of helpful information, along with test data from the lasers they have approved.  For the most recently approved laser (last August), 81% of people in my diopter range (-5 to -6), and 93% of people overall, had 20/20 vision or better after three months.  That is awesome.

i've never had it because im apparently one of the lucky few that can actually see with my natural eyes.

but all my friends that have had it, swear by it.  to a person say its one of the best things they've ever done.  and this was 5-6 years ago when it first was available.  i can't even imagine how routine it is now.

I had laser surgery last summer, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. My corneas were too thin for LASIK, so they did PRK instead. PRK is what the military uses instead of LASIK. From what I understand it's essentially the same thing, with the difference being how they get inside your eye. LASIK has a flap which reattaches and heals; PRK removes the flap entirely and it grows back. So the healing time for PRK is much longer ... a few weeks or even months. But it's not like you're disabled or anything; I was driving the next day.

Before the surgery my eyes were so bad that I couldn't even read the big-ass "E" at the top of the chart. Now I'm at 20/15 in both eyes. My long-distance vision is so good, it's just stupid. I can read shit at distances that I have no business seeing. It's great during hunting season because I can see for miles. It's also great being able to wear normal sunglasses, not getting glasses wet in the rain, etc. (But you still need reading glasses, and in fact I think laser surgery can hasten the need for them. It wasn't a big deal for me because I was already using bifocals.) They can also "aim" your eyes, depending on your normal activities. People who use computers a lot can get one eye adjusted for the monitor and one for distance; golfers can get one eye adjusted for the tee; etc. Your brain adjusts for the difference.

PRK has a lot more recovery time and I had to use a whole line-up of eyedrops for a while. But really, that's the extent of the recovery. It's not bad at all and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. However, from what I've heard, most of the people who have problems after surgery weren't following their post-op instructions. My sister-in-law went to the same doctor I did (but had LASIK) and she's had some minor complications. But she isn't doing the follow-up care correctly, which boggles my mind.

As for the procedure itself, it wasn't bad at all. There's a little tug when they saw off the top of your cornea, but no pain. Then the NOISY machine starts lasering. I could smell smoke, and my wife said she could see smoke (they let her watch). I told her later that night in my Valium/Ativan haze, "Oh, that was just my bad vision floating away."

So yeah, I'd get laser surgery again. No question. Just do what the doctor says and do the follow-up care like they say. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks everyone for the input!  I'll report sometime tomorrow after the surgery(most likely in a Xanax induced fun zone)how everything went.  I'm definitely excited to get rid of contacts and glasses.

Maybe he is out enjoying the sight of things better than reading OWA.

i'm afraid the surgeon thought he said "bi" surgery and he made some adjustments that are causing a few problems.

haha Shit I totally forgot.  That's how well the surgery went.  Took about 10 minutes, I took my xanax and passed out the rest of the day.  Everything is healing great and I haven't had any issues with dry eyes or pain at all.  Best month's salary I've ever spent in one place.

So they throw in one lasik eye for every cataract surgery they do?  Kind of a medical bobblehead night?
The rules of distinction were thrown out with the baseball cap.  It does not lend itself to protocol.  It is found today on youth in homes, classrooms, even in fine restaurants.  Regardless of its other consequences, this is a breach against civility.  A civilized man should avoid this mania.

As a result of an auto accident I had about 30 years ago, cataracts developed in only one eye. I had surgery for that
in January. My opthalmologist included the lasik in the over-all price of the cataract surgery, the cost of which was shared
by myself and my insurance company. Because she expects cataracts to form in my other eye at some point in time, lasik
is not an option until that occurs and is treated. She's the boss, and a nice looking one too.
