It's hardly a surprise, but it's still amuses me to think the HOF starting second baseman is benched because he might get a hit.

I'm going to break an unwritten rule here and Ask a Player's Mom:

Mrs. Pence:  Hunter; DH or OF?  You have 5 minutes at the podium and may feel free to post pictures of Hunter as a 3 year old.

Oh.  Maybe that was one reason I posted the Opening Day lineup near the top.  I was hoping someone would ask why I did that.

I assumed you'd posted it to highlight the fact that 75% of it is now totally different.

I do not have any pictures of Hunter as a 3 year old scanned, however they ARE cute.  As far as the main question, whatever helps the team works for me.  He has a lot to learn and has a tremendous work ethic.  Garner did say that he projects as a corner outfielder in his opinion.  Hunter has a lot of respect for Garner.  I am not attempting to hedge, I am not a baseball expert.  I am just the mother that cheers for the team.

Uh.  For what?

ETA:  You know, I've been thinking about this for 2 minutes and I'm more than a little confused.  What do you (Jim) have to do with what I asked, even in the slightest?  Are you in line to be the next CF for the Stros?  Am I that far out of the loop?  There was a 3 hour discussion in the TZ today about this very subject and the player's mom (who, last I checked, isn't JimR) is in the GZ.  I decided to ask her if her son is a DH or an OF.  How often do you get that opportunity?  Not everything, Jim, even on OWA revolves around you.

No. Not officially.  They were "we'll see" ing in fact, I saw that Biggio was projected to start today.  But, waiiit? What's this? The plane, (on schedule) gets in at 4:30.  Biggio is old, he cant play with only 8 or 9 hours of sleep, (5:30- 2 or so) So he sits.

So Alkie, how bout that play?

That was awesome.  That guy sure can play.

3-0, eh?

Yep.

Talkin' to yourself?

Guess so.  How you been?

Smoking hot.  This morning I pimped myself out to get some authentic French breakfast?

That right?  How was it?

It was...hey, Ernie, how did Dale Murphy get on second base?

Second base?  That the one in the middle?

I think...yes...YES.  Middle.

I have no idea, Skip, I was listening to your story and thinking about the time I was at Mrs. Mapplehorn's birthday party for her dog.  You know that little dog had the same name as an old buddy of mine from high school.

That right?

That's right.  Same name.  Not a dog, though.  No sir, the Fluffywumpkins I knew was a Jewish kid from Brooklyn.  Said his name was Romanian.

That in the middle of Europe?

I think....yes....YES.  The middle.  No.  Wait, did Dale just score?

Think so.

Jenkins steals second, Munson put the ball on the bag but he beat it.  He pops up and Bruntlett gives him a reflexive forearm, Jenkins rocks back, falls off the bag and is tagged out.

So, like, our starter just lead off the inning with a walk off Ben Sheets.

37% of the time, a team will score after a leadoff walk.

He is okay, not sure about the wrist.  It has been bothering him, and he has been wearing a brace on it.

What was it from?

I used to get hit.  A Lot.  I didnt mind because at least I got on.  I'd really milk it too.  Limping down to first.  Next pitch, gone.  Maybe he's baiting the pitcher.  "Oh, I sure couldnt handle a fastball in.  Please dont throw that fastball in..."  Said Brer Hunter.

So........middle of the 6th....Jennings vs Sheets.

And it's 3-1???

What's wrong here?  Why isn't it in the teens yet?  Why is this game moving so fast?  Why was Jennings walking for himself on ball four?

The one before, which was shoulder high, Carlos was either pissed he missed it, or pissed he swung at it.  Judging from the next pitch, the former.  So count on him swinging in future.

I had the opposite impression; I thought he was pissed because he swung at a pitch that was unhittable-high. But I've seen him hit other pitches that I would have assumed to be unhittable, hit them hard, so who the hell knows.

Credit to Jennings for pitching around those birthing hips.  That shits not easy and if you dont fully rotate, Brad's shoulders fly open.

This team is done.  Who can we get for Jennings?  Who can we get for Lidge if he's "better"?  Do we want to even trade Lidge?  Can we extend him?  How about Qualls OR Wheeler (not both)?

We could trade Ensberg or Lane, but...oh that's right, they have no more trade value.

You've seen PETCO, yes?

Makes the Dome look like pre-humidor Coors.

Oh, I know.  I seriously considered a minor fandomship in the Padres for having the balls to move into a cave during the Era of Offense.

Who wants another beer?

Trade no relievers.  Mclane is going to throw buckets of money at Jason Baylor Jennings, so if they dont trade him, Uncle Drayton is going to Jennings house, and over Earl Grey and Mint Milanos, offer him 3 +1 for 60 total. (15 per)

I bet you the Astros can trade Ensberg at the deadline to a team who needs a decent defensive third baseman and doesn't much care about the ephemeral offense.

They won't get much, but I bet they'll get offers.

The market is totally different at the deadline than in January. I am well aware that the team could not trade him over the offseason.

it was in the middle of a very long road trip, and my friend and i hadnt planned on staying in cooperstown for more than a day, but we didnt see everything we wanted to at the hall so we decided to stay over niht.  we bought some beer at a local convenience store, ran into some local cooperstown kids in the parking lot and ended up drinkin beer and smokin schwag weed with them at some spot on lake oswebo, listening to them talk shit about the hall while we defended it as thouh we were defending our own grandmothers.  afterward we made our way back downtown and slept under the stars.

There were recent overtures from LAA for both Ensberg and Lane, so Footer is wrong in that regard, but no word what if anything was offered.  I suspect crap, but shit may have been available.

If Drayton loves him so much, and truly believes he wants to sign here, then trade him and then go after him as a FA.

Either way, there will be quite a few FA's this winter:

Zambrano, Jennings, Buehrle, Garcia, Colon, just to name a few.

Would there be a conflict of interest with trying to sign Zambrano, seeing as he already owns the Astros?

I'm not gonna defend milo. He's working well past gold watch time...but I will salute him on his way out to the golf course. Hell, he can probably outdrive me, anyway.

This season has been my first experiece with MLB on XM, and it's been (mostly) cool listening the the various home flagships. Of all I've heard so far, Euk/Uek has been the only one who sucks.

Okay, there. I wrote it.

Stephen Randolph, your "suck it up and don't make me use anyone else" pitcher of the night.

There's been a lot of that lately.

Don't expect it to stop any time soon.

I don't think I have ever seen a runner NOT score from second on a double.

Of course, I'd never seen a squeeze bunt result in a double play before this year, either.

NEHPETS!!

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Once again, we ask... what are the alternatives?

Bork kept the ball over the plate and in the yard.

Jesse Garcia is up with 2 outs in the 9th, one out away from PERFECT for Parra.

Has anyone ever seen a runner score from second base on a sac fly? Stay tuned.

You have failed me for the last time.

Admiral Wheeler: [appearing onscreen with Captain Qualls] Lord Vader, we have a 3-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth and I'm preparing to...
[Wheeler stops, and suddenly begins to choke, clutching at his throat]
Darth Vader: You have failed me for the last time, Admiral. Captain Qualls?
Captain Qualls: Yes, my lord?
Darth Vader: Make ready to land our troops beyond their infield, and deploy your slider, so that nothing gets on base.
[beside Qualls, Admiral Wheeler utters one last strangled gasp, and falls over dead]
Darth Vader: You are in command now, Admiral Qualls.
Admiral Qualls: Thank you, Lord Vader.

Tonight's game has not exactly been a catching clinic.
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

If you're talking about the kind of clinic you visit to get a penicillin shot, then yes, it has been.
