Okay, so Shiner 98... (non-BB)
« on: June 22, 2007, 04:42:01 pm »
...is pretty damn good stuff. Glad I finally jumped on the OWA bandwagon and tried it last night.

Anyone here a Fireman's No. 4 fan? A buddy of mine raves about it and how excited he is that it's in bottles now. I finally tried some a few weeks back at Crown & Anchor, and it was good, but more or a taking 2 out of 3 from the Padres good, not sweeping the Cubs or Co-Ards good.

I finally found some today (a lonely six pack in the back of the lowest rack of the cooler at Spec's) and after half of one fully concur. Though I anticipate further research is required. About 66 oz of more research.

I agree.  Real Ale's other brews (particularly the Pale Ale and Pale Rye Ale) are much better.

Yeah, the HEB at Braker and 183 here in South Dallas had plenty, too.

they are running low, though.  i was there today, and they only had two warm sixers and a few more in the fridge (minus the one I got).

for all i know they've got plenty more in the back.

Fireman's #4 is my current favorite beer. Goes perfect with the hot Texas summer. Crown and Anchor, Dog and Duck and Homeslice pizza all have trouble keeping it in stock. One of the employees at Homeslice told me that after SXSW the beer blew up and they are now having trouble keeping up with the demand, which is bitter sweet for me since I love seeing Austin and other Texas beers getting props yet I cant stand being relegated to "canned beer". Anyways, Real Ale and Live Oak are both pretty great microbreweries and I couldnt be more happy that they are located in my town. With the exception of Colorado microbrews, I doubt many other states can hold their own with Texas.

Shiner 98 is really good as well, I went out and got some a few weeks back and have been steadily drinking it since. Hopefully it stays around for awhile.

Also, for those IPA fans; Victory Hop Wallop, 471 Small Batch, and Lagunitas Maximus are a cut above the rest. Try them. Now.

Washington state has it's fair share, not just Red Hook & Pyramid.

I buy my beer at The Whip In. You name it, they have it. Best. Beer. Store. In. Austin.

From downtown take I-35 south, exit at Woodlawn (1st exit past Riverside), then go past Woodlawn and stay on the acces road. It's right on the right. Before Oltorf.

SUNZABITCHES!

They have the Deus in their Beer Cellar.  For those who were asking me about off-the-charts Belgian ales a couple weeks ago, that was the one I mentioned by name and have never seen for sale (retail) in Texas.

I'm on my way.

I haven't been to the WhipIn since I lived off Riverside in 1997.

I've gone full circle and reached back into the 70's files....drinking MHL from the pony bottles.

Too many are saying '98, though.....so I'll have to "splurge", it sounds like.

This stuff is below average for a Shiner product.    Last year... better.  Kolsch... much better.   Shiner... better.

We're already back home.  Actually, we went in to go to the Farmers Market downtown, which was pretty cool.  Not huge, but plenty of cool things for us to eat today.

Then headed to the WhipIn.  I gotta tell you, that place has changed a LOT since 1997.  It was basically a convenience store back then with an above-average, but not great selection.

We-he-hell.  Things have changed.  We got 6 belgians we can't even buy at the Spec's downtown in Houston.  Major league selection to say the least.

I'm about to start another thread in a second that will address the next issue that was raised this morning...stay tuned.

The Whip In.  wow.

Brings back some fond almost-memories.

Also, anybody know the name of a beer store around north campus, maybe 30th near Speedway?  Great beer selection, deli counter than never appears to be open, they seem to almost exclusively hire recovering drug addicts, it's located on a curved road, next to a hukka shop maybe

Whip In rocks.  There were a couple of sixes of 98 left at Central Market earlier this afternoon, the central one in Austin.  Buena suerte.
I'm in love with rock and roll and I'll be out all night.

*insert neener*

Tonight I had two Shiner 97s at a bbq.  And the host was gracious enough to send another 2 home with me.

I like them a lot more than the 98s... which is really saying something.  Hopefully the 99s or 100s will be more like the 97s were.

Woah woah woah. Woah. Hold on now. Shiner 97 is still available?

No, sadly (hence the neener)...

But let's just say my friend (my godfather, actually) is a bit of a beer nut.  He had a couple sixers left from last fall.

If I had the resources available, I would purchase a facility and pay someone to brew 97 for me. Where does your godfather live? I may have to acquire a ski mask and procure the remaining supply in the dark of night.

That's it; I'm off to Spec's on Bunker Hill, then the Spec's in Memorial Village, if Bunker Hill doesn't have it.....then to Plan B.

Which Spec's?  They said it's all gone for the year on Bunker Hill.  Let me guess.....none of my fucking business?  Strike that.  Didn't know Spec's was in Austin, too.  I'm off to Memorial Village location.  Geeked!  They have it.

There has been plenty at the Randall's and Kroger I go to here in Houston.  I'd say it's good but not great, yet every time I see it I buy some thinking "well, it's not going to be around forever."

Sorry to be late to the party, but I just tried it and don't like it. It's sweet but flat, meaning no real depth. I can handle sweet if there is plenty of depth, like, say, Bohemia, but this beer just doesn't have a rich enough or deep range of flavor for me.

So the good news is, I won't be hogging all the beer.

For a fraction of those resources you can fly round trip to Prague and drink the original that inspired the Shiner knock-off.  U Fleků is more famous, but I think U Svatého Tomašu is better.

This may have been mentioned already, but if you do miss Shiner 97, there is a beer out there that is pretty much a carbon copy:  Samuel Adams Black Lager.  Picked up some at HEB last week, and have been enjoying it immensely.  Best part is, it's allegedly available year-round.
