Name the first pitcher who had complete game shutouts in his first two appearances for Houston.

Robin Roberts?

A very good guess, as Roberts did throw CG shutouts in his first two Astro appearances, but he wasn't the first to do so for Houston.

Dean Stone

Ding! Ding! Ding!

In the third game of the Colt .45's, Stone whitewashed the Cubs with a 3 hitter at Colt Stadium, then tossed a 5 hit blanking at Wrigley a week later. His season went downhill quickly from there, however.

Good job.

45 years of owning the Cubs. Feels good.

Probably once he was done with the Cubs.

Dean Stone
Got here late. If this was an off the cuff response, I am VERY impressed. (not that it matters to anyone)

Same to JimR, that would have been my gut call.

Great question!

Me too. If you notice, I had to carefully word the question with Houston, instead of Astros or the dead giveaway Colt .45's. I didn't remember the Roberts shutouts, I had to check after I read your post. My idea was simply a quick try at a Houston related trivia question, so I started checking the box scores beginning in 1962, and three games into the new franchise, Stone appeared. Then his next start a week later. Voila. I spent a grand total of 5 minutes researching this.

As with most trivia, I also learned something along the way, which is one reason it has been my lifelong hobby. Always something interesting if one will just do a little digging.

where do you find the individual box scores?

Roberts was hanging on trying to get 300 wins when he came to Houston. his FB was gone, but he could really pitch. the night i saw him, he was masterful--something like a 4-hit shutout, i think. on a better team, he might have gotten a few more wins. i remember one LA game in particular; he took a 2-1 lead into the 9th, but Gilliam spoiled it with a 2-run something. of course, the Astros did not score in the 9th. we traded him to the Os or somebody the next year, and he hung them up short of 300.

i like to look at the all-time roster in the media guide to see the famous and great who passed through Houston during their careers and played in at least one game.

Yeah, though it ain't the same as if they were "brought up" Astros or Colt 45's, I'm always a llittle proud to hear the team's name associated in even a small way with the careers of Matthews, Roberts, & Fox... same with Sutton. Nolan Ryan is a different story.

check this:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/HOU/1962_lu.shtml
click on the date on the left and it should give the games individual box score.

me, too. it does not really matter to me when they were with Houston.

wow--i just looked up Roberts' stats with Houston in 1965: 5-2, 1.89

If geekiness makes you queasy, I strongly suggest you stop reading now.

After I finish my current Strat-O-Matic project (1996), 1962 is the next season I'm going to play.  I don't know much about the very early days of MLB in Houston so I'm really looking forward to it.

I do have Robert Reed's Six-Gun Salute book, though.  It is excellent.  Any other books about the early Houston teams/players that you'd recommend?

Of course that will work, but I use retrosheet, which is where BR gets their info. Fifty years of box scores, good luck!

I'll confess too.

I have modernized now with APBA for Windows, but I played the old dice roll, player cards, and result boards for many, many years.

I still do not care for the game platform baseball games. I prefer the simulation games rather that the arcade type.

To completely geek-out this thread... Do you prefer the current computer APBA to, say, Diamond Mind? It's the only simulation game I've played.

I haven't played Strat-O-Matic in about 10 years now, but I remember how much fun that was.

I got the career historical disks, selected roughly the 500 best players in history, did a draft for 16 teams, and had a great time playing season after season.
