It's come to this, highlights from the broadcast booth instead of from the field.  But... it's that way for now.  Top three broadcast moments last night:

3.  Jimmy D takes one look at an Aaron Harang swing and exclaims "Hey!  He's been watching my instructional video!  Stick your butt into either clubhouse, drop the front leg into the bucket, swing the bat like your chopping wood.  Repeat swing".

2. Brownie takes a moment from all the *yawn* action last night to drop this gem "Andy Pettitte is 3-4, 2.84 ERA... I wonder if Andy feels like he's still pitching for the Astros?!?!"

1. Jimmy D interviews Garner and asks "Hey, Narron just got tossed after six pitches... you have any sort of record for being tossed so early that would match that?"  Garner "No, not really... but if the umpire keeps calling those Griffey strikes, we might test it!"  Jimmy D "Walter Alston once let Vin Scully make several calls from the booth... want to let me help out some too?"  Garner "Ah... well... I dunno... let me see if I can see you... oh, there you are... oh, hey, too much glare, can you do something about that, I can't see your signs!"

On a more somber note, their dissection of Jason Lane's pinch hit attempt was telling.  "2-0 count here... Jason, take out the 3 wood and let her rip" *pop* fastball down the middle of the plate, Lane took it all the way.  "Ahhhh.  You know, when your team needs to you to do something and you're trying to help, you have to go ahead and swing the bat on those... I mean, what have you got to lose?"  Count goes to 3-1.  "Okay, now look for the pitch to drive" *pop* same meatball fastball, Lane took it all the way. "ooohhhh" mutters Brownie.  "Ahhhh... what is he thinking (or something to that effect)" exclaims Jimmy D.  "He needs to swing the bat on those, he isn't going to get another room service fastball like that again".  *swing and a miss* "Strikeout... slider away.  Inning over" says Brownie.

think my favorite JD quote was from the first year MMPUS was open.  the subject of hitter's BA came up, and JD mentioned that his career BA was .079.  he then goes (paraphrase) "i'm at least an .087 hitter in this place..."

This is the sort of thing that makes me worry for Sean Berry's job.  Not that he should keep it if this stuff is actually his fault, but the Astros are taking a horrible, horrible approach at the plate.  Not just in this latest tailspin, but all through this not-so-young-anymore season.  Only Lee appears to have a clue, and I think he may be doing it himself.  There's a countless number of thigh-high or higher fastballs that have gone un-mashed.

This isn't about technique, this is about "WTF were you thinking?!!!!"

Just to add, Garner said "too much glare from that dome." Quite the funny dugout interview. JD then asked for some powder.

I agree with Gar on the 'wouldn't call a strike' on Junior bit.

Also, in the post game press conference, Gar was asked a question that viewers couldn't hear from an unnamed source. Gar then said "Are we going to rumble now? I would rather rumble with Alyson." He was grinning the whole time. I hope it pissed off whoever it was.

On that Lane at bat, Jimmy called the breaking pitch (on the 3-2 count) right before Harang threw.   He said, he has thrown Lane all fast balls so far, you can all but bet he throws a curve here.   he did, it spins right over the middle and Lane swings right through it.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Maybe the Ump subscribes to this wish.

Eggszactly.  The groan from Brownie previous to that pitch (the 3-1 meatball fastball from Harang... about 89 mph do nothing pitch) was very telling.  At the time, the Astros were trailing 4-2 and needed something to happen.

And Lane just wouldn't swing the bat.  This is the right handed power hitter off the bench role.  And he won't swing the bat?  Something is incredibly wrong with that.

Ah yes, 2004.  What a good year that was for Mr. Lane.  I wonder what ever happened to that guy?

Heck yeah! It's not every day you see a homerun emanate from the dugout.

If he was still hitting like that, he would not have to be worried about a job (not that he is anyway for some reason).

Oh yeah... I how could I forget that classic!  He did.  He said the NL Central was like the brain-dead twit race from Monty Python, the gun goes off and everyone runs in circles with no one really running towards the finish line.

Great line!

remember after the world series when all the talk was about changing the organizational hitting philosophy to one of getting on base and situational hitting.  could this have anything to do with the team-wide ensbergademic?

Which WS?  After the 05 series, all the talk was about Ensburg and how effective he was at the plate.

Either that, or about how he failed everytime after a Berkman IBB.

I heard the morning guys on 610 talking about how Greg Lucas made a bit of a gaffe.  Ashley Judd (who was at the game) recently did a movie called "Bugs," an R-rated psychological thriller about a guy who goes nuts, believing that aphids are infesting his body.  Lucas said the movie was an animated film about bugs.   Oops!

Are you serious?  Iceberg was horrendous in the post-season and in the WS in particular.  He was so cold he froze the bat of everyone around him, notably Berkman's as he never saw a pitch to hit.

did any of that have to do with the hand injury he suffered the last month of the season?
