Rosenthal says...

That Tampa will be listening to offers for Baldelli (no thanks, he's on the DL again), Crawford, and some other outfielder. I don't get it; I thought that outfield was the core they were building around.

(He delivered that tidbit on the Fox pre-game show.)
I remember all the good times me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Why is it...every year...the Drays are "offering up Crawford" and EVERY year, every team makes a pass for him and EVERY YEAR he finishes the year in Tampa?

Because right now there are 4 outfielders in their outfield of the future (Crawfod, Baldelli, Dukes and Young).

I'll believe the Rays are looking to move Crawford when it actually happens and not before.  Crawford is under contract through 2008 at very affordable $4 mil for this year and $5.25 mil for next year.  Plus they have club options on him for 2009-10 at $8.25 mil ($2.5 mil buyout) and $10 mil ($1.5 mil buyout).  As long as he continues to play well, I see no reason they would want to move him until at least the 2008 All-Star break and only then because of his upcoming salary bump.  The option years are affordable for almost every team except the Rays.  But even for the Rays I wouldn't think they'd feel compelled to trade him.

Because every year the Drays try to acquire a pitching staff for him.

I think BJ Upton and maybe someone else are supposedly going to end up there as well, according to popular logic.

Would the panel of Tampa Bay experts care to weight in this? Baldelli still too risky? Crawford still unattainable by anyone not named Oswalt?

I'm no expert but it's obvious Baldelli continues to have injury issues. The hamstring keeps getting aggravated and even when he's playing, he's been struggling so I would say he's risky.

I just can't picture a scenario where Crawford gets traded unless it is for a top-line starter such as Oswalt. He is one of the best and by far the most popular Rays player so there would be extreme fan backlash if he was traded. Plus, he's still relatively cheap. That said, I have no idea what the team would do to try to get better pitching, which is what they badly need.

No, you wouldn't want to piss off your 6 season ticket holders.

Nope, only 5.  The 87 yr old great-granpa died yesterday. His remaining tickets are for sale on ebay.

You mean waiting for Casey Fossum to become awesome isn't the answer?
