Roster Moves
« on: May 14, 2007, 07:36:16 pm »
I noticed Chris Burke is in LF for RR, so I checked the roster to see who was moved.  I also noticed that Kevin Davidson is up with RR and Travis Phelps is back with CC.  That still leaves one too many on the RR roster unless I missed something.  Also notived that JR Towles is on CC roster now.  Any other moves?

Injury to Ardoin in RR I believe and promotion of Davidson to RR leaves a spot in Corpus for Towles.

Santangelo's suspension plays in here too as a reason Towles was brought up.

They had already activated Jeff Mackor to fill Santangelo's spot.  I had not heard about the Ardoin injury, though ... nothing in the unAmerican Statesman, of course.

I also notice that Goethals has been activated at Lexington, but only got into one game.  Is he headed for Salem to fill Towles' spot?

Also Josh Flores was injured last night.  No word on the specific injury or how long he'll be out.

Heard that Sergio Perez thinks he'll be back in a week or so.

I would be surprised of Goethals is called up to Salem.  He was a bullpen catcher primarily in Greeneville last year.  I recently heard a rumor that Brandon Caipen who played 3rd in Greeneville & Tri Cities has been working out at catcher during EST.  If one of the catchers at Lex get's moved up, I would look at Caipen possibly being called up from EST.

I wasn't meaning that Towles was filling his spot on the roster but that he is taking his spot on the field.  J. R. wouldn't have been brought up if Lou was playing.  He is much more of a prospect than Mackor and I feel he will get the majority of the playing time at catcher.  That is what I meant by Lou's suspension playing into it.

Sorry I misunderstood.  I agree that Mackor is pretty close to the end of his shelf life ... sort of a replacement for Danny Fatheree.  Towles was not exactly tearing up Salem, though, and I wonder if he really "needs" to be facing a higher level pitching.  Perhaps those with more dugout experience can enlighten me on whether catching a higher level pitcher is an important part of the developmental process?

In any case, Lopez by himself at Salem does not sound like a solution to anything.  Henriquez & Sapp have been sharing time at Lexington, and both seem to need action at that level.  That's why I speculated that James Goethals (another Mackor in the making?) might get the call there.

Ardoin has a strained calf.

I missed this one.  Barthmaier was actived yesterday and Wigdahl put on the temporarily inactive list to make room.  He pitched in relief of Paulino last night.

I don't have dugout experience beyond my son's LL team and my church softball team.  I think it is about his catching more than his hitting.

I can see your reasoning about Goethals, but really that gives you two back ups and no real starter/prospect.  I was just throwing the Caipen factor in there to muddy the waters some.

The larger catching issue is what happens with Towles when Ardoin/Santangelo (whoever is first) comes back?  If JR has trouble behind the plate or batting then sending him down is a no brainer.  If however he steps up and hits and does a good job of handling the pitchers and defending what will the Astros do?  I have trouble believing they'd send him down anyway.  It will be interesting to watch and I'll have my ears open in CC.

Would definately be a shot at Lou too, as in, getting suspended lost you the spot.

No question this puts JR in a position to move Lou far behind him on the pecking order.

According to the Salem Paper today:

"Catcher J.R. Towles was promoted from Salem to Class AA Corpus Christi on Monday, and has been replaced on the Avalanche roster by Justin Tellam....

Towles' move is expected to be temporary."  JR went 1 for 3 in his CC debut.
