Astros Trivia, the ultimate pinch hit
« on: May 03, 2007, 11:43:05 am »
Name the two players in Astros history that hit pinch-hit walk off grand slams.

This question was originally asked by the ol' Reverend Wild Dog who had me diggin' through reference books on his Sunday morning trivia services in years past.

Bonus: Three other players on four occasions had game ending walk off grand slams, although they were not of the pinch hit variety.

That one was still fresh in minds. Yep, off Byung-Hyun Kim of the D-Backs on June 27th, 2002.

Good job.

Bob Aspromonte?

Part of the bonus, Aspromonte was the only Astro to hit two walk off grannies. Way to go Noe! Old school right there...

Once on August 26th, 1966 as an Astro and first on June 11th, 1963 as a Colt 45.

I remember the 1966 one, I wasn't there at the dome, but I heard it on the radio.  And my Dad talked about it for quite awhile too.

Milt May was the other pinch hit walkoff grand slam, vs the padres in 1974.

Indeed it was Milt May, great job! On May 22nd, 1974 against the Friars and Vicente Romo.

ironically when researching for the answer, may and zaun both happen to be catchers.

Edit: as an aside, two players are tied with the most career slams in an astros uniform, name them.  (for anyone)

Aspromonte had 6 total, but only 2 in an Astros uni. Bagwell had six as an Astro.

Jeff Kent had a ton of grannies if I remember correctly, but only 1 with Houston (going on memory here).  Carlos Lee has 11 if I remember and he hit his first one with Houston this season.

No problem, wording can be tricky at times in the trivia world.

Still two other walk off grannies on the bonus book. Dig dig dig people!

Which was also the worst radio call ever by Milo.  I can still recall it to this day.  Starts off fine, "there's a high fly ball...going back to the wa-aaa-aaaaall...{really long pause here}....{crowd starts going ape shit}...grand salami, grand salami, grand salami, grand salami, grand salami...."

You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you. Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here, close. You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?

you should have heard him last night.  In the 4th or 5th, roy was pitching and out of nowhere during live action he makes a mention of some group in the stands.   WTF?

Astros win a game on a ph walkoff grandslam and all you here is "Grand Salami" repeated about 7 times.

Worst.  Call.  Ever.

Hint time: One of the players once earned 5 straight gold gloves, and the other is unfortunately known for a swinging at a wild pitch.

Didn't Lane hit a pinch hit granny last year?  Not sure if it was a walk off but think it was in the 8th of a home game so tecnically it would have been our last at bat :-)

No. Maybe struck out on a wild pitch wasn't the best clue. How about dashed hopes of all Astro fans when the season ended after said strikeout?

BTW, the PH walk-off grannies have already been answered. This is part of the bonus question.

Well, I cheated and found it interesting of who was on the list of 5 GG winners that wore an Astros uniform...which I think is the most by a player ever wearing an Astro uni.

Cesar Cedeno
Steve Finely
Joe Morgan
Phil Niekro
Doug Radar

Little Joe had five straight-- for the Reds, and Finley never had one in an Astro uni. Also, when did Phil play for the Astros?

The Red Rooster could flat play the hot corner and was a streaky hitter. I loved to watch him play. Had the Astros won more back then, I think that he'd have been mentioned with Brooks Robinson.
