WHat?

Palmiero not playing 1st?

In the end, does it really matter what order the players are left on base?

It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

Berkman 6/9 career with 2 HR against Armas.  Normally that would mean he should do some damage today.  We'll see...

Amy:  burke heard you.  Leadoff double.

Really nice bunt for Loretta, everybody safe!  Think he was trying to sacrifice?  It seemed like it.

On the slo-mo replay, it looked like his arm was tagged a split second before his hand touched the base.

Slo-mo?  You have a much better channel than I do.

We're watching FSN Houston in LowDef.  You can ALMOST make out the ball.

I'd like to see them score runs in any inning other than the 1st and 9th.  Of course, scoring in the 1st and 9th in addition is acceptable.

Ann and Nancy Wilson are the rock group "Heart".   The pirates use to have two Wilson's on their team, hence the nicknames.

I think a big reason for the small crowds yesterday and today at PNC is the weather forecast.  That's why I left town yesterday morning.  The forecast looked so bad, I thought they were in for lots of delays at best and possible rain-outs both days.

Eventually people will learn that it's actually good baseball teams that pack 'em in.

Good job by Wandy: 32 pitches through 3 innings.  It should would help if he could get through six or seven innings.  Knock on wood.

Drunk?  They have beer vendors selling Yuengling in the stands at PNC, not just your typical Miller/Bud crap.  Unlike at MMP, where even if you sit in the club seats, if you want a decent beer you have to go to the bar.

Armas walkes the bases loaded, then hits the showers. Bayless enters and gets Ausmus to pop up behind first. Wandy, batting right handed, grounds into a DP.

This lineup needs an enema in the worst way. That was fucking atrocious.

What did you honestly expect from Ausmus and the pitcher?

It's all Biggio's fault. If he hadn't started last night's futile comeback, Phil could've pinch-hit for Wandy and let the bullpen go to work. We'd maybe have more than one run on the board.

A weak pop fly and a DP.

Do I know what a rhetorical question is???

Wandy's pitching well, so Gar doesn't PH for him.  Just like the guy that makes the error always comes up and hits the HR...now Wandy's going to give up a crooked number to the Bucs.

Ausmus? At worst a GIDP to score the run. He exceeded my expectations.

Not to treat OPS as an end-all, be-all tool, or to open up that tired debate...

But not a single player in this lineup has an OPS over .800.

That was exactly what I expected.

Well, whatever happened, Wandy does not deserve this loss (if that is how it turns out).  Too bad you can't give the bats or defense the L.

Often 1-2 INNINGs behind.  Also leaves out details about the play, especially errors.

Sorry, did not mean to be demanding.

Going back to this, what happened on the bullshit call? I can't figure out if this was Sanchez getting 1B on a Lamb error, or getting 3B on a Scott error. Gameday is light on the details. Thanks.

Two separate plays.
First, a grounder to 3b that's a twin killing if runners aren't in motion.  Lamb fields, throws to first, Sanchez ruled safe, indefensible call.
Then, Bay singles to RF, Ninja bobbles the ball, and Sanchez goes from 2nd to 3rd on the bobble.

I'm still unclear on what happened.  Why did Lamb get an error?  Did it appear the throw was there on time?  If so, did Lamb bobble the ball or something?  High throw?

OP slaps one to LF, Bay overruns it, reverses course and makes the catch.

Mid 8, 2-1 Pirates.

Better stay through the 9th, fuckers.

I'm still unclear on what happened.  Why did Lamb get an error?  Did it appear the throw was there on time?  If so, did Lamb bobble the ball or something?  High throw?

Unclear on that myself - there was a little too much "terrible call" static from Braymond to understand it.

Lamb dropped the ball, then picked it up and threw to first.  Call was terrible, the throw was clearly on time and Lance's foot was clearly on the bag.

Running breaking from second on the pitch likely distracted Lamb. Lamb bobbles the ball as the runner arrives at third, picks it up and fires across the diamond to Berkman. The ball bounces short of first and Berkman stretches and picks it out, only to have the ump make a bullshit call. The throw beat Sanchez.

Ya know those plays where AE grounds to the hole between short and third and Gnatstein makes a throw that appears late but gets a hustling Adam by a hair? If he's out on those, there's no fucking way Sanchez was safe on that play.

On those plays the grounder probably wasnt bobbled and the throw probably wasnt bounced.  Sloppy play sometimes skews the call.  Fyi, didnt see it, only read about it in the newly inspired GZ.  Now with fewer monosylabic grunts!

Adam LaRoche does his best Berkman impersonation, hits a dramatic foul ball that would've been a grand slam, ball goes swimming in the river. Then Ks.

There, got that out of my system- seems the most appropriate place for this sentiment.

Thanks to all those who did gameday today and gave me a sense of what was going on as I was at work.

On a positive note- I like this starting pitching (and really the pitching in general). If this can somehow magically keep up all year I think this team can be a real contender.

I was thinking about this this morning.

Berkman, Lee, and Everett are the only regulars I think would start on most other teams.  And Berkman is killing the offense, and Lee is starting to slump pretty badly.

Bases loaded for Lee??  Guess we can't ask for much more than that.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

And if you include the Pirates, it's the pace of a 69 win season.

Kinda curious about what's going through the runner's mind at 3B on an outfield fly with less than 2 outs. If it's a HR, you wouldn't need the lead. If it's in play in front of the fielder, whether the lead is "needed" depends on whether staying put would force someone, and if it's SF distance, why take those steps towards home. Fill me in, someone?

I'd like to play the Pirates as much every year as they do.  But the April Pirates and the June/July/August Pirares are two very different teams.  Come to think of it, so are the Astros!

They had no room to spare on the relief pitching.  It was literally Wandy or bust today, so holding the Pirates to 3 runs like he did for as long as he did was admirable.  But the Astros hitters are woeful right now and I just don't know why.

Once again, the middle of the lineup has left it up to the #7 hitter to produce.  Good gosh, did they not learn from last year?

basic rule that everyone learns in PONY League. when at 3rd with less than two outs, if the ball leaves the bat in the air, go back and tag up immediately. do not break toward home...EVER.

you always need to lead off. this is when the ball is hit.

OK, so from what I could glean, it sounds like Burke broke for home, then realized, oops gotta go BACK and tag up? Didn't Biggio get caught off 3B recently? I'm going without any video here. Thanks, Jim :)

I think the runs not cashed in earlier are the difference.  The pitching was going to be thin today after last nights marathon.  You'd think the approach by the hitters would be slightly better than it was today against a pitcher with such a high ERA.  The middle of the lineup is a bit fragmented right now and that has got to change for the fortunes to change.

The pitching is fine 'cept for a week of some spotty starter work.  Overall, we're back to wondering about the offense, re: middle of the lineup, yet again.  Damn!

Its horrific, stupid, and not funny at all.

Other than that, nothing.

Also irritating.  In the way that someone thinks something is clever and funny after being told repeatedly by everyone who hears it that it is not clever or funny and yet, irritatingly, persists in the delusion that it is clever and funny.  Which, it is not.

What have you got against that nickname?  I think it's funny.

Yeah, I've helped come up with some throw-away nicknames myself; I think we all have.  But "Wingnut" isn't creative, or humorous, or catchy.

Plus something about it sounds 'clunky.'

I think maybe it's that it sounds really half-assed, like you could see two sub-75 IQ'd rednecks sitting in their garage, drinkin' their PBRs, watchin' the Astros game on their Trinitron when Adam steps in and one of them nudges the other and says "that boy's head looks like one a' them wingnuts I just put on the washin' machine!"

Nope. Just being honest.

If the TZ just let stupid nicknames go, we'd be Astros Daily. And nobody wants that.

We're the Assholes of the Astros Online Community, and proud of it.

Much the same way that if we accepted non-descriptive and content free exclamations in the GZ, we'd be listening to Milo. And nobody wants that.

It's my understanding that nickname was given to Adam by Bagwell, Biggio and Ausmus.

Burke to whoever for whatever we can get.

I guess we're the first to tell you it's not then?  If so, why get defensive about it?  It's true, it really sucks and it leaves me scratching my head as to why anyone would repeat it more than once.  I've come up with the worse nicknames in this place, so I know what I'm talking about on this one.  I use my nick more than once when it's really bad, I will know it's on me if folks say it really sucks (and I know it too deep down inside).

Roll with the punches (I know, mixed sports metaphors, take two steps back... my bad), but getting defensive is not the answer.  Perhaps you can just whisper "wingnut" to yourself as you type AE or Adam Everett or Everett, just to make yourself feel better?

Go.  How 'bout out of common courtesy to this little online community?  Or, you can "call him what [you] like, thank you" and annoy the hell out of a bunch of people who have enough on the field shit to be annoyed with right now.  Your call.
You may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"

I'm actually in a very good mood and losing streaks in April rarely mean that much to me.  I just think it is a couple weeks worth of not telling Amy that this particular nickname is just bad, m'kay?  Should we just lie to her instead?

Of course not! Go with your instinct. Play it one day at a time, etc. Just noting the increased testiness over the last few days, is all.

Well, we're even then because I don't give a fuck what you think.

You shouldn't.  Just saying if someone says it sucks, you shouldn't get defensive if it's the truth.  What you want to use is your own business and rock on all you want.  It will probably mean a whole lotta "that really sucks" replies, but you can certainly ignore them all you want too.  Just don't reply thinking the other person is wrong and it is *funny*... it really isn't.

This begs the question why such a bunch of intellectual snobs are interested in being Astros fans.

I don't know, why?

I like how you portray as fact something that is strictly a matter of opinion.

I'll make it very simple to you: my own opinion and that of many others in here is that this nickname sucks.  Repeating it ad nauseum doesn't make it better, it makes it suckier.  It is all anyone said to you.  Now, you're the one who is defending it to us as if we are the ones who are not allowed to share our opinion to you.  We are.  And you have been told (*at least by me and maybe pravata*) that you can do whatever the heck you want, including continue to call him that seriously lame nickname.

But what I've said repeatedly is that this will not change the opinion of others that it really sucks.  So don't get defensive about someone else's opinion that is a truism for them.  In most of our opinions, it is a really lame nickname.  So walk away if you wish but why the heck are we supposed to not have this opinion?

I'm making this comment with a total straight face, no harsh tones, very real question:

This isn't about the nickname, is it?  This is about proving that you can tolerate the feces that OrangeWhoopass throws at you and proving you're (wo)man enough to deal with it without running off like everyone else who has tried roughly the same thing, right?

Honestly, I have no problem with you being here; I'm not one of the high holy keepers of the board.  I'm not interested in a flame fest.  But I have often wondered since you showed up why you wanted to be here.  You don't play along with the thinly veiled gender-based jokes.  You don't seem to find anyone in here all that funny.  Other than being able to swear (really well, I'll add), I never quite got why you found this place interesting.

I used to have a comfy home in a small private internet forum of Astros fans.  That forum no longer exists.  Since I don't really enjoy the AstrosDaily forum, I went looking for another home.  I had frankly only heard negative things about OWA in the past, but a friend encouraged me to give it a try, so I am.

And no, it's really not about the nickname.

Or "homeslice".  Someone said that to me and then laughed as if he had just said the funniest thing ever.  I walked away and he said "okay... *phew*, *snicker*.... catch you later... homeslice!!! harharharhar... homeslice... hoooboy... harharhar".

I kid you not.  I don't even know what "homeslice" means either.  And why would a 52 year old white man say that to me and laugh?

The only people you'll hear positive things about OWA from are the people who are here.  So, that is neither surprising nor upsetting.

I'm just isolated up here in Virginia and am looking for some fellow fans to commiserate with.  It's going really well so far.

Alright, I can certainly understand that.  I think the problem you're having (or that we're forcing you to have, if you want to look at it that way), is that OWA (as your friends probably tried to tell you) is a terribly unfriendly place.

It is really genuinely not here for people to just come in and "talk Astros baseball."  Again, understand I'm not saying this with a condescending tone at all, so don't read it that way.  We (as a group) just aren't interested in just the rah-rah bullshit nor the talk-radio knee-jerk shit (although I've made quite a living at satirizing it in this forum).  It's not like Speedy's or AD or AstrosZone.  No one here cares if you (the royal you, not just you, Amy) are an Astros fan.  That's nice; in that you're not a Braves or Cards fan.  But everyone here plays a role that is either accepted by the rest of the group or is accepted because they are accepted by everyone else in the group except yourself (again, any yourself, not Amy).   So far, I think the group has pegged you as a new person who swears a lot and likes to talk Astros baseball, but whose only claim in here is that you use a (lame) nickname over and over and seem to believe that you jinx the Astros.

I'm not sure what the answer is for you, because most people who have tried what you're doing have left long before now.

What I'm trying to figure out is...why do you seem to want to stay here when clearly all you've met is people telling you how lame the nickname is, how poor your PBP skills are, and how little you add to the discussion.  Not my words, I'm just summing up what I've read so far.

Frankly, I find it interesting that you stick around.

Everything Alkie wrote is BS... he's just trying to pad his post count in the race to "Pope".
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Well, it's funny, because I was just going to say, "I have no idea what BudGirl sees in this place either" but like Jim says, she never questions the board and doesn't seem to get offended or defensive.

I'll take it a step further, I'm not sure why anyone under 21 or who was female would want to hang out with us.

Honestly, I think that if I had not met many of you, I would think you are all a bunch of jackasses and you probably would not know me.  I know many of you are better than what may be portrayed on the internet.  In fact, I consider some very good friends.

And sometimes, you all do offend me, but I just read it and delete what ever reply I may have typed before posting.  I hate arguing about opinions because rarely, to never, does someone change their opinion (and I don't mean in just baseball).  I don't think those discussions are worthy of anyone's energy.  I also think the discussion of whether or not "wingnut" is a good nickname is stupid.  I don't care for the nickmane, but mainly because I didn't get it until today.

After all many think I only watch the Astros because of Ausmus, when in fact, he is just the cherry on top for me.

that's not Alkie at all. whoever knocked him out and took his computer is not fooling me.

Well, really, I find it interesting.  I mean, the amazing thing about the internet (especially boards like this), is that it's like having a row of a billion bars.  You walk into any of the bars and meet the people inside and if you like the atmosphere and have something to talk about, you sit down for a while and mingle.  If not, cool, you pay your tab, get up, walk out, roll your eyes and tell all your friends what elitist cocksuckers those people were.

Well, these forums are like that except you don't even have to pay a tab or get out of your chair to leave.  It's just so easy to jump from board to board and I think it's pretty well known that there's at least a dozen forums for every hobby under the sun.

I think it's interesting when someone who clearly doesn't like us, comes in here, takes abuse, and then stays.  I want to know what would make someone do that.  What do they gain from it?

What do they gain from it?

Proof that they can "stick it out" and some level of (self-deluded) acceptance. Challenges of that perceived reality often result in hackles coming up, rather than "looking weak" by backing down from said challenge, or -- worse yet, apparently -- turning tail and just leaving. That's my theory, anyhow. Personally, I don't much care for the mean-spirited stuff, but there's enough humor around here to make that tolerable enough to stick around. I know I say lame stuff, but it doesn't bug me that others find it lame. Doesn't bug me that someone has me on ignore, either, heh.

I think the 64,000 dollar question is, why would anyone ANYWHERE ever want to actually meet any of us after reading this board?

You know, I have heard that women date the bad dudes because they want to change them... sort of the maternal instincts sort of thing.  And good guys never have a chance with the ladies because of their good guyness.  I don't know if I buy that, but juneberno.

Yep. It was like Astros christmas. Thanks!

Just wanted to make sure the postal service delivered it.  I've recently found out that not everyone that I sent postcards received them.  Big Disappointment for me.

Did you ask me to send you a schedule magnet and/or calendar?  No, you did not.

I think the discussion has worked its way to a wonderful bonding moment for the board.

Good enough thread to almost match last night's/this morning's shitfest anyway.

It has nothing to do with maternal instincts.

Just remind me to take pictures of Mark's girlfriend next time. I was too busy getting photos of Brad, for some reason.

Yeah. I didn't know about it until someone else mentioned it recently. In your profile, it'll indicate how many, but not who (though  I'm pretty sure I know who, in my case... best for that person to just use that feature anyhow, since they didn't seem able to do so organically, so to speak).

I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.
