Oswalt has started with first-pitch balls on all 4 batters.  Not a good sign.

After that last start Roy had on short rest, he now has 4 career starts on 3 days rest.

3-1, 2.73.

Four.  Man.  Rotation.

Certainly the South must be full of short rednecks who have electricuted themselves on their trucks.  How hard could it be to find the next one?

Short rednecks is no problem, even if you limited to those who 'electricuted' themselves. But ones that can pitch like Roy are somewhat less common

An obscene amount this month. 7 in April, as opposed to 4 in May.

It's the back to back ones that kill me. At least I'll be back in Houston for September, which also features 7 KNWS games.

What's fantastically obnoxious is there actually is a blank channel here in Beaumont, channel 15, which picks up baseball games that aren't picked up by FSN.

Of course, they are Rangers games. In Beaumont. Right now, I can watch the Rangers against the A's on this mystery channel, which broadcasts a mere 90 miles from MMPUS. It was the same last night.

A DAY AT THE BALLPARK
                or
The Sunday Day Game

   by  Alkie

It was Sunday, a day game after a night game and the Astros were playing.  "Agiiiiiiiin?" asked Craig Biggio.  "No, son, you're sitting."  "Agiiiiiiiiin?"   "Yes."

The Astros had <some pitcher> going against <some lesser pitcher> and were favored.

The Astros bats slept late.  <Some pitcher> threw perfectly well, but <lesser pitcher> made the Astros look like Florence Henderson at a Damprid Party - unnecessary, unwelcome, and unnecessary.

After 4, the Astros were down 2-0 and had barely had anyone on base.

Nothing else happened the rest of the game.  You don't need PBP.

THE END.

speaking of 4 man rotations, whick Sir Alkie was, i read in some history of the Astros that Phil Niekro vetoed a trade to Houston in 1979. if he had accepted it, the rotation in 1980 would have been Richard, J. Niekro, Ryan and P. Niekro.

It feels that way listening to it. I was shocked it was the FIFTH inning which just ended. It sounds like the Astros are on the receiving end of a 20K perfect game.

Because lefties don't need gimmick pitches.  Left handed?  Does the ball roughly go "forward" when you throw it?  Sign here.

Now, and I think we can all agree, Biggio probably doesn't make that play.

Hot shot to Loretta's right which he dives for an gets completely outstretched.  Falls over and throws the ball from his ass to nip Fielder by a billionth of a red-cunt-hair.

OUT.

Loretta goes to his right, dives, and makes a bang bang throw from his knees to get Fielder, who runs faster then you might think.

Does anyone have the actual numbers on the pitcher-injuries these days vs back in the days before "pitch counts" and other made up caca?

I know someone said that the injuries are fewer now, but I wanted to see the actual numbers (because I don't believe it).

Everett doubles to left

Ausmus lines to left.  Everett who was attempting a steal, hustles and just makes it back.

Lamb PH for Oswalt.  Lamb lines to SS behind 2b.

Hall doubles down left field line on the second pitch by Lidge.

Garner removes Lidge after one batter.  Why didn't he do this the other night?

How much detail do you want on pbp?

OneBadNight gives up a leadoff double on a pitch-on-a-tee.

Gar pulls him.

Now wait a second.  Ok, this I don't get.  The other night, he leaves him in too long.  Today, he pulls him after 2 pitches?  Why?  What does that serve?  Did he make a deal with the Astros - he gets to face one more batter; gets him out, he keeps his job, gives up a baserunner and he has to clean the toilets with his beard?

Right, but pulling him after 2 pitches?  Hall (a great hitter) smoked one down the line on a pitch that was not-a-hanging-slider.

It wasn't a great pitch, but it wasn't the worst I've seen (this week, even).  Why would you pull him so quickly right here?  Not second guessing, I would like to hear the actual answer.

Because there is a parade of lefties coming up and Gar wants to try to keep it as close as he can. If Lidge had gotten Hall out he might have been lifted.

Milwaukee TV showed Lidge and Woody having a conversation on the bench.

Praise be the god of your choice, Dave Bush finally sits.  His outrageous scoreless IP streak against us ends.  Let there be celebration.

Carlos Lee comes up as the possible tying run.

Well, it's funny, I was going to post that his swing just looks 'off.'  It looks like he's dragging the bat and is getting under the high stuff and on top of the low stuff and then he stroked a SOLID double.

Excellent observation.  May of been a situational thing for Garner to see how Lidge would react.  Regardless of outcome, he was probably ready to bring in Miller for Fielder.

He does look off left handed.  He is usually more fluid with the swing left handed.  Right handed, he's always looked ackward so it's hard to tell when he's off.  But last Saturday in Philly, the reliever for Philly threw him three straight 94 mph fastballs down the middle of the plate.  Berkman looked like he pulled off, like it hurt to swing.

I thought "oh-oh".  But thought since Garner went to him and asked if he was okay when they arrived in Cincy, then Berkman is okay.  Maybe it's just a timing thing for now, but that AB in Philly did concern me.

He's never looked that bad swinging a bat to me (left handed that is).

Neither do we in the Golden Triangle, my maign.

Ultimately, I blame the Astros for not putting more pressure on their providers to serve their territory better than this.  *sigh*

Palmeiro?  Okay, maybe because of his good eye.  If Cederstrom is going to have a tight zone, this will work.  But Orlando better be ready to swing the stick.  Aye!

Burke gets a bloop double to left field.  Risky, but good hustle.

Loretta walks.

Berkman RBI double.  Loretta to 3rd.

Double switch Francisco Cordero in to pitch.  Gwynn in.

Lee hits one inches foul down the RF line.  Would've been a double.
    Swings at strike 2.
    Ball
    Foul
    Ball
    Foul
    Broken bat looper foul.
    foul
    foul
    ball
ball.  Bases loaded for Scott.  No one out.

Scott strikes out looking.  ugh.

Ensberg singles to RF. Loretta scores.  Bases still loaded.

Everett RBI walk.  Berkman scores.  Bases still loaded.

Orlando Palmiero pinch hitting for Ausmus.  Biggio on deck for the pitcher's spot.

Palmiero fouls one for strike two hitting himself in the helmet, knocks helmet off.

Sorry. Missed what happened but Palmiero out.

Biggio pops to Fielder in foul ground.

I had a feeling the best pitch to hit would've been the first pitch.  But Palmeiro is a hitter who will make you work.  Coco just went after him and got him.

Nothing but heat.

Do-Ray said "fastball, strike one!", I had a bad feeling about it then.  No sense having a good eye at that point, he's coming after you... be ready to hit!  Tip the cap to Coco, he did his job at the very end.

Yes.  Fastballs by Cordero.  Took the first one, swung at the second one and fouled off.  Swung at the next one and lined it foul down third base.  Swung at the next one and missed.

Mano-a-mano on that one.  Coco won.

Radio said it was a pitch that looked inside.  I don't know, but you gotta swing the bat on that count.  But then again, AE did not offer at some close ones too, so it evened out.  I thought Palmeiro was going to do more than he did.

I was secretly hoping for Lane and his magic ninth inning work to come into play, but suspect that Garner really like his contact lefty up there on that situation.  Oh well, nice game.

These last two losses have been tough.  Lance's oh-so-close to grand slam last night, and OP's failure to launch today.  They sure are fighting to the finish of these games though.
