DFE's: The Final Countdown
« on: April 16, 2007, 03:12:11 pm »
Recall this is the last year of DFE's with the last day to sign a draftee being moved to August of the year the player is drafted starting with the upcoming June draft.  Here is a statisitical look, as best I could find, for each of the draftees.  There are 4 I could not find any info on.

RD 26: Lenell McGee, Oakton CC, 3B: 0.413 AVG, 92 AB, 38 H, 4 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 15 SB, 4 CS.

RD 29: Rafeal Parks, SC-Salkehatchie, RF:  NO STATS; MAY NOT BE ATTENDING

RD 33: Codi Harshman, Pima CC Arizona, CF: 0.390 AVG, 123 AB, 48 H, 6 3B.

RD 34: John Anderson, Bossier Parish CC, RHP: 56.1 IP, 54 H, 20 ER, 24 B, 37 K, 3.195 ERA, 2 W, 3 L.

RD 35: Patrick Allen, Everett CC Washington, RF: 0.367 AVG, 30 AB, 8 R, 11 H, 1 2B, 8 RBI.

RD 36: Johnathan Moore, Temple JUCO, C:  ON THE ROSTER; HAS NOT PLAYED

RD 37: Trent Henderson, Skagit Valley College Washington, SS: 0.349 AVG, 63 AB, 10 R, 22 H, 2 2B, 6 RBI.

RD 38: Casey Anderson, LSU-E, C:   NO STATS; MAY NOT BE ATTENDING

RD 41: Axel Gonzalez, Wabash Valley JUCO Illinois, CF: 0.366 AVG, 112 AB, 41 H, 11 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 25 RBI.

RD 42: Kevin Sullivan, Oakton CC, C: 0.293 AVG, 58 AB, 17 H, 3 2B, 10 RBI, 2 SB, 1 CS.

RD 43: Greg Joseph, Mount San Jacinto JUCO California, LF:  NO STATS; MAY NOT BE ATTENDING

RD 44: Adam Pilate, Bevill State CC, CF: 0.270 AVG, 89 AB, 16 R, 24 H, 3 AB, 1 3B, 16 RBI, 0.326 SLG, 8 SB, 0 CS, 5 E.

RD 45: Cody Madison, Riverside CC California, CF: 0.292 AVG, 96 AB, 25 R, 28 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 0.396 SLG, 14 BB, 14 K, 4 SB, 2 CS, 2 E.

RD 48: Jerry Quinones, Compton CC, LHP:  NO STATS; MAY NOT BE ATTENDING

RD 49: Andy Launier, Sierra JUCO California, 1B: 0.300 AVG, 120 AB, 23 R, 36 H, 7 2B, 6 HR, 28 RBI, 0.508 SLG, 12 BB, 15 K, 2 SB, 2 CS.

What all this seems to boil down to is that most of these guys have hit pretty well all year.  While Cody Madison and Adam Pilate have not been great at the plate.  Also, John Anderson has just been so-so on the mound.  If the stats hold the rest of the year there appear to be several players here the Astros may go after.  And, with no first or second round pick this year adding a couple of good DFE's seems prudent.
Goin' for a bus ride.

nice compilation.

I have also heard that the OF class in this year's draft isn't all that strong, perhaps they could shore that up with some DFEs and focus a bit more on other spots in the draft as well.

When is the cut-off date for DFE's?  I know it is close cause the draft is close.  Are we talking 2 more weeks or just 1?

Any word on if they Astros are going to pounce on any of these once their season is over?

1 week is what it has traditionally been.

Astros are a tight-lipped.

The draft begins June 7.  The first round will be telecast on ESPN 2.  So they've got almost 3 weeks to get anyone signed.

Seems like McGee should be an answer to 3B needs, although only 3HRs with metal bats seems a bit alarming.  But then he looks more like a guy with speed than power at 3B.

Also seems like Harshman would be a good pick up as well, he looks like some speed with the 7 3Bs.

Any word on them defensively?

Athletic.  He probably needs a lot of instruction at the plate.  Remember, he's a freshman at community college.  If signed he'd go to rookie Greeneville.

No official word but at that age they're generally a work in progress.  No doubt McGee will need plenty of time to develop.  No word on whether Harshman is a natural in center or learning the position.

Also, nothing from the Astros about whether they'll sign anyone.

Well I'm a dumbass.  I completely forgot to mention that Everett CC and Skagit Valley are in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges which is a wood bat league.

Well that makes Henderson look better, but closer examining of Allen makes you wonder why only 37ABs.

I'm pretty certain Allen was injured for a good portion of the season.

Ok, we are either right on or just passed the deadline for DFE signings, right?

Any word yet on if the Astros made a move on any of them?

BA says we signed Chris Frye ... NDFA out of LSU-Shreveport.  Two questions ...

1.  Who is this guy?
2.  What are the rules on NDFA's?  Was he eligible and undrafted last year?  Or what??  It must be a pretty small loophole, or we would se this happening a lot.

5th year senior.  They can be signed prior to the draft if their season is over.  Top offensive player for NAIA LSUS.  I'll include him in more detail in the draft article.  Astros did this last year with Ryan Owens.

one last little tid-bit before a draft thread is started:

Quote
The debate over No. 1 isn't the only intriguing aspect worth following in the '07 draft. Changes made to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement last year created a supplemental first round that could reach 35 picks if Max Scherzer doesn't sign with the Diamondbacks.

Several teams have a gaggle of extra picks, including the Giants, with six picks in the first 51, including three first-rounders. The Rangers have five choices in the first 54 slots, the Blue Jays have five of the first 56 and the Padres have six of the first 64. (Conversely, the Astros' first pick doesn't come until No. 112 overall.)

Makes you feel good knowing they won't pick until 112. Sheesh!

At least they didnt' do something silly like offer arbitration to Clemens and Pettitte to get the pick compensation.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.
