Some good things that stood out from games 4/5
« on: April 06, 2007, 10:25:41 am »
Round Rock
Estrada finishing his first AAA game without much difficulty.
Conrad off to a good start offensively.
Pence throws out a runner on attempted sac fly.

Salem
Josh Flores got on base 3x in 5 PA and had 2 SB.
Iorg 1-3 w/BB and RBI and 1 SB.
Diaz going 6 strong.

Lexington
Chris Johnson went 2-4.
Henriquez went 1-3 and threw out the only would-be basestealer.
Hudspeth went 6 strong.

It's critical that Flores, Iorg and Johnson show improvement offensively this year.
Goin' for a bus ride.

For those of you who saw the Express game last night, what's your take on Pence's baserunning in the 4th when he was thrown out at the plate?

Pence should've scored, but it looked like he peeked back to his left and it cost him.

I watched the game last night and several just off the cuff observations:

Round Rock looks very dangerous as an offensive unit.  Pence-Conrad-Munson is a murderers row for PCL.  Munson got a ton of pitches to hit last night because Pence and Conrad basically  got on base a lot and Eric became the guy to challenge.  Turned into a great night for Munson.

Eric Munson is a butcher behind the dish.  Much of what the Round Rock staff was throwing last night got a bit botched by Munson's glove work.

Nieve stuggled on the hill, but when he had to get an out, he did.  Still did way too much pitching in innings he just needed to go after the hitters.  But you know what, it was great to see him work on his changeup and breaking stuff rather than just rate back and throw hard and get batters out.  I think his maturation as a starter is going to take a few months, so it's good he is dedicating his time to working on his pitches.  It will pay off in the long run.

Estrada is an imposing figure on the mound and his location was very sweet last night.  A couple of times, the umpire was frozen behind the dish trying to figure out how the heck this kid threw that pitch in that location.

Hunter Pence throws well, but his side arm throw is weird.  He looks like Eric Byrnes out there though.

And how 'bout Stephen Randolph last night? Was it five Ks or six?

AA Statesman reports he struck out 5 of the 7 he faced.

Five as I remember.  He pitched effectively north and south, using the four seamer as his strike out pitch.  From what I saw, he was able to get his four seamer passed the hitters because he had them looking for down at the knees on the inside corner for a good amount of time.  He pounded the lower half of the zone with two seamers and sliders and then went upstairs with the four seamers for the swing and miss.

His four seamer is true, meaning it is straight as an arrow with little late movement.  But for him to be effective with the four seamer, he has to continue to show he can hit the inside low corner on a hitter.

Pence took too wide a turn. the peek did not hurt, if he took one. the main culprit was a great throw.
Often wrong, but never in doubt.
