That was a serious jack off of Lidge.  Scoreboard said 412 feet, but he bull cocked it over the 375 sign in the left field power alley and it might still be rolling if it hadn't connected with the front teeth of a boy scout.

Ya mon, that was quite impressive.  I had just returned to my seat in time to see the blast sailing over Chris Burke in deep left center.  When I realised it was Pence rounding the basses I got that warm and fuzzy feeling, until I also realized it was off of Brad Lidge.  Then I felt kind of dirty.  Any idea what the count or the pitch was?

Lidge threw pretty well. Borkowski was outstanding. Jennings looked good.

the jury is still very much out on Burke in CF.

So, if Burke is not cutting it in center where does he get playing time or do you trade him?  I would think that Pence would be brought up at that time.  Do you think that if you traded Burke that Conrad could take over for Bigde in 08?

I think it's just very much a work in progress, and they won't know what they have with Burke defensively until mid-summer.

what do i think? what does that matter?

i have always liked Conrad, but it is very apparent that Purpura et al love Burke. if he hits, he'll play somewhere. he definitely is not a comfortable OFer yet. nearly every first break on the ball he made was wrong. Pence's double was a very high fly that he should have caugght. he either shied away from the fence or lost the ball in the lights. he had enough speed to catch the other balls after breaking wrong, but he ain't Willy T. yet.

I don't want them to wait until mid-summer (is it June or July?) to see if he will work defensively.  I will be extremely pleased if Burke can handle the job, but I think Beltran and Taveras proved that MMP needs a great centerfielder to help win games.

They've left him off the 40-man roster and exposed him to the rule 5 draft.  No org thought enough of him to draft him and give him a look.

Every impression I've been given is that as far as ceiling goes he's a younger version of DJ Houlton.  And, that tracks with how the Astros have dealt with him.

I didn't mean to imply that their stuff was the same.  Just that where they would top out at was as a AAAA or at best a major league middle relief (last guy in the bullpen) job.  Douglass has been exposed to the rule 5 draft in 05 and 06 yet no one took him.  Clearly the Astros don't think he'll amount to much more than they can get anywhere else.

If you think he's upped the velocity from 90ish take a look at him when the gun is on at the Dell.  I'd love to hear what he's got this year.

Hunter Pence put on a show last night. The homer was a freakin cannon-shot, the double that dropped behind Burke was about 3 feet from the dead-center fence, and he showed off a pretty good arm from CF.

Josh Anderson looked pretty good at the plate, too. He took a Lidge fastball and served it into left center field. That kid can FLY, too.

Douglass definately looked amped last night, and when Estrada wasn't heaving balls in the dirt or to the backstop, his stuff looked pretty nasty too.

Should be an interesting year in RR, if their pitching is worth a damn.

Thing about Pence is that he did the same thing offensively last year.  He tore the cover off the ball until late May, I think (I don't have my calendar of stats in front of me); .33+ average.  Then ice fucking cold.  He barely hit above .200 for, again I think a month and a half.  His overall average dropped to .280ish.  He manged to keep it there the rest of the year.  That's something to look for this year, IMO.

Word always was that in a 100 Anderson would have finished 1/2 a step behind Taveras.

Jim's comments are dead on, and count me in that phone booth, I'll be loading in my nickel, dime and quarters.

Burke's first step on balls hit straight on were not good at all, but thanks to his speed he was able to compensate for the most part.  Looked like he lost Pence's ball in the lights (or lack of light) or at least that's what his mannerisms told me.

Carlos looked good at the plate as I expected and didn't cheat himself out on his swings, in the field there are still some questions.  Being that it was a ST game and the wet conditions, I'll cut him some slack on the hustle, but I believe he could have gotten to that looping liner to short LF that ended up about 10 feet in front of him.  While I and my 7yr old son was in my old seats (for those that weren't Express regulars that's the 3b coaches box...better known as row 1 3b) my wife and 3yr old son were in the LF birm and heard the jawing from the crowd telling Carlos he needed to take instruction from whoever it was in CF that made the sliding catch.  Carlos turned around and chuckled.  Also curious why he didn't fire one home on a short popup with runners at 2nd and 3rd.  I think he could have got the runner at home.  But as I told my son, it was a perfect strike to the cutoff man.

Pence looked good, but can also see that he needs to work on his approach with 2 strikes.  His last at bat looked better with 2 strikes as he tried to battle the pitch...(hint, contact is needed though to see another pitch).  Overall very impressed, and was thinking that the Chronicle summary might be asking if the wrong person was sent to Round Rock after he crushed that ball off Lidge.

AE booted a routine DP ball (told my son how rare it was to see one of those) and knocked in two with bases loaded.  Good at bats for AE last night, including a smoking foul ball off the wall to the right of me...wasn't sure if that was going to come off the corner of the photographers stand or not, so I decided to keep the chicklets in place and let that one go by.  Can't say so much for the dude that barehanded one of Carlos's liners into the 3b crowd.  He stuck his skin mitt up there and pulled it in.  Great thing about it is he can leave the ball at home and still go to work and show everyone his trophy...."yea, see right here next to that piece of ivory poking through...yea right there, all that black/blue/purple with the laces cut into it...that's right were I caught it!  Good thing I'm amphibious and can use my other hand to...well you know".

Morgan...well it was good to see Morgan out there again.  I'm biased as my family and I got to know Morgan pretty good in the season he was here.  Still had a great attitude and came looking for us before the game.  Brought a bat he gave my son in 2000.  The bat broke when he hit a big fly out to the birm and he gave it to Mason after that game.  It had 14 on the knob, but being in the minors, didn't have his name.  So we brought it and he signed it for my son and took another picture with him.  Now I can put that next to the picture of Morgan holding Mason on opening day 2000 when Mason was only 3 months old.  Needless to say Morgan has always been his #1...Berkman is #2 since he's a left 1b too.  Anyway, his throws looked more fluid than last year, and looked smooth at the plate.  I thought his first AB was going to land on the equipment shack roof.  Think the wind and thick air really knocked it down.

Garcia made a bad ass backhand play and submarine throw to start a DP.

Douglass was high and tight all night, including the chin music to Ensberg.  I thought it was hilarious when Morgan got up and charged about 1/3 the way to the mound, crowd loved it, and so did Jackie.  But Jim is right in that he looks to have the stuff.

Side bar:  Mason and his two buddies got some good autographs.  While everyone else was hanging out at the locker-room stairway down to the field, I had them at the back door between the locker-room and the batting cage, so the players just walked right down the fence in front of them and they were the only ones there talking to and getting each one of them to sign while daddy stayed off in the distance.  The only disappointment was Berkman, he cut across the grass about 15 feet away from the kids and then ran out of the cage back to the locker-room.  Whether or not he was avoiding the three boys on purpose (which left a bad taste in my mouth) or just in a hurry and getting in game mode I don't know, but didn't leave me all warm and fuzzy.  I got over the avoiding the kids part, because hey, he's a ball player and they wouldn't avoid three little boys looking for an autograph from a hero!  Was also a little disappointed that Morgan and Burke were the only ones to stop on the 3b line for autographs before the game (that I could see, could be wrong), and Morgan when leaving between innings stopped a few seats down from me to give two kids his batting gloves.  The rest of the big leaguers just walked on by before and after the game without hardly a nod of the cap to the 3b crowd...especially Biggio.  Didn't even acknowledge the crowed before the game walking down the 3b line before and after...(but I did see him sign a bunch of stuff by the 1b dugout).  Not complaining just thought it was a little odd, especially for the kids that were there asking what the heck?  (again, not bashing).

Congratulations to Jackie Moore on his 50th year of baseball and boy was it strange not seeing Spike Owen at 3b...congrats to him as well on his retirement.

Great time at the ballpark, love hearing the sounds of the game.

Oh man! Speaking of Biggio...

A young pup was sitting in front of us in the first row, sporting a Roy Williams Cowboys jersey. In the bottom of the 1st or 2nd, Biggio ended up with the ball at the end of the inning and came jogging in. Of course there was a mob of kids everywhere just above the dugout screaming for the ball. Biggio looked right at the kid with the 'Boys jersey on and asked him "Is that a Cowboys jersey?"
Kid excitedly said, "YEAH!"
Biggio grinned at him and said, "Not a chance!" and threw the ball over into the sea of humanity in the middle of the row. Cowboys kid looked pretty bummed.

About a minute later, Bidge popped back up above the dugout with a huge smile on his face and tossed the kid in the Cowboys jersey a ball. Turns out, Bidge had signed the ball for him while he was down in the dugout.

Pretty awesome.

I think it's just very much a work in progress, and they won't know what they have with Burke defensively until mid-summer.

At least this year we have options. With Scott, Pence and Lane we have the ability to shift things around in the outfield and juggle offense vs defense with those fielders. Obviously all three of these guys want to play and are willing to do anything to do so. I really feel great about Lane's determination and the work ethic he displayed over the winter and into spring training; surely this type of attitude in the dugout will have some inspirational value as well.  Finally some of it will probably have to do with Burke's willingness or ability to live by Garner's rules at the plate; if he's kind of half-assed on defense and then doesn't deliver offensively according to Garner's game plan then surely his playing time will be at risk.

Curly, excellent stuff, thanks.

Jim, I'm not in the salivating, get-Pence-to-Houston camp, but I'd be curious to hear your comparison of his work in center versus Burke. If Burke just craps the bed offensively in the first half or gets injured, is Pence even a realistic possibility, or does the club go with Lane (or someone else)?

I'm not Jim...  But I would suspect that, should Burke seriously struggle in CF for a long period of time and Pence just keeps on clobbering the ball, I wouldn't be surprised if they bring him up for at least a look-see to see if he can help the club immediately.

That being said, I doubt that he'll come up in 3 or 4 weeks if Burke isn't mashing the ball. It would take prolonged suck to put those wheels in motion.

i've seen Pence for an entire game so i'm an expert! long strides, covers a lot of ground, caught the ball, very good arm, not at all graceful like Taveras but he gets there. i have no idea how he'll do--someone whose judgement i trust doubts his range. we'll see.

Lane looks like an entirely different player at the plate.  I didn't even recognize his swing...it looked much improved IMHO.

Curly...

Since my first trip down to Kissimmee in '96 I've missed three spring trainings, one of which was in AZ.  Needless to say, I know alot about getting autographs (always been a memorabilia nut, but have slowed down in my older years).  Biggio and Bagwell (Especially Bidge) are two of the best star players you're every going to run accross in terms of getting an autograph.  I've been around Bidge alot at games and practices and he signs about 75% of the time.  Bags was almost identical.  I've seen both stop and sign until there's no one left...which is ridiculous if you think about the mob that regularly surrounds them.  I was beginning to wonder about Berkman myself.  In three years I hadn't seen him sign a thing, but this past year I got my jersey signed, and he signed until there was no one left.  I think one thing to remember is that games are not really the place to get autographs, at least not the best place.  Players have a job to do....they have to get prepared to play prior to a game, both mentally and physically.  And after, many have to take care of their body again, with ice, etc.  Getting to the ballpark extremely early...or waiting until they've cleaned up and are getting on the bus are the best times to get autographs at a game.  In spring training, the practices are the best place, hands down...players are more laid back during them, so it makes sense that they'd be more willing to sign.

Anyhow, remember that players are people just like you and me...don't judge them on what they did at one game.  They might of had to be somewhere, or just had a bad day.  I'll admit I was starting to wonder about Berkman after attending spring training three years in a row without ever seeing him sign, but you know how that turned out.  Heck, the Tampa Bay game that was televised the other night...they interviewed Bidge after he was pulled in the 7th and he said he had to hurry out to catch his kids baseball game over the internet.  Later the camera showed him high-tailing it to the locker room, with many fans waving baseball, etc at him for autograph as he ran by.  Only the TV viewer knew where he was going.

I know you weren't dogging'm, but I thought you might like to hear about the luck I've had.

Here's a list of my favorite/not-so-favorite players based on experiences from spring training.  There's a story or two behind each...I won't bore you with it here, as this post is getting a little long in the tooth already, but if you want to hear more about a certain player just PM me.

Favorites:  Kris Benson, Bidge, Bags, Everett, Spiers, Craig Wilson, Kerry Wood, Troy Patton, Pankovits, Monte Mansfield (Astros prospect - former, I think) Veres

Not-so-Favorites:  Sammy Sosa (complete jack-ass)

I think Berkman does shy away from signing unless he gets caught, then he'll sign a lot.  We had to catch him at Spring Training.  A lot of people kept asking the players when they were walking from one field to the next to sign but the players told them after practice.  Most of the players ended up signing.

I ended up with Biggio signing a picture, Ausmus signed a picture and put my name on it, Palmeiro signed a picture I took with him at Fan Fest, Qualls signed the picture I took with him at Fan Fest, and Berkman signed a picture and put my friends name on it (yes, I gave it away).

My friend Cyndi got a lot more autographs (Lane, Bruntlett, Burke), she has some picture of the team she was getting signed, so she asked for more autographs.  She also got Pence's autograph.

Everett didn't really sign.  Bagwell didn't sign and some were being pissy about it.

Clemens went down a line signing after tossing BP.  Koby said he would sign anything anyone asked him to sign.

When we went to the Cleveland game, the guy taking tickets was talking about Morgan and how nice he was signing autographs and stuff.  I thought that was cool of him.

I also think we had better luck at the practices than we did at the games.

My favorite autograph story is from two years ago when Koby was in Greeneville.  We park in an area that makes for an easier exit but a further walk to the park.  While we are walking toward the park, my son who was 5 at the time says, "Dad, that's Roger".  He was right.  He recognized him out of uniform.  Roger signed the balls he and my daughter were getting signed by the Greeneville players.  Roger was gracious with his time and autographs.  He even took the time to find Koby's name on the ball so he could sign his name next to Koby's.

Koby was very patient with signing autographs in Greeneville, as well.

One of the players once told me that Tim Bogar (manager of Greeneville in 04) told them "Enjoy signing autographs.  Someday people won't want you to anymore."
Always ready to go to a game.

Thanks again for the ticket Jim.  Lidge gave up that hit to the leadoff hitter, kinda off the end of the bat, and the huge Pence bomb, but no one else even came close to hitting him.  Granted, it was one inning, but I'm not too worried about Pence getting to him.  I guess maybe I'm starting to believe the Pence hype.

Berkman really didn't seem to be in an autograph signing mood last night.  He was one of the last players to come out onto the field, about 15 minutes before the first pitch.  Barely had time to get his warmups and stretches in, much less do any extensive fan interaction.  But we did get Ensberg, Lamb, and Oswalt's signatures, though... so no complaints here!

Finally getting to see Pence in action firsthand last night was great.  If he's not wearing an Astros uniform by the All-Star break, I'll be a bit shocked.

They just showed highlights of the Express game tonight, and Pence skied one to shallow left field.  The short backpedaled, then waited for a long time, before losing the ball in the sun and it dropped.

Pence ended up on first.

I hope he learned his lesson.
