Appy League has to go with just 9 teams
« on: February 09, 2007, 11:58:58 am »
Some of you have probably been following the situation in the Appalachian League over the past few months. The Blue Jays pulled out of Pulaski after last season, leaving the circuit with just nine clubs. The league tried to find another organization to replace the Blue Jays and also looked at forming a coop team. No luck. So the Appy will go into the season with an uneven number of clubs.

That means 2-game series will become the norm. Which also means that Greeneville and the other clubs will find themselves with a bunch of consecutive days off on their schedules. In turn, that's gonna be rough on the pitching rotations. The latter might be easily overcome if organizations adopt tandem starter arranegements (which is something not exactly uncommon in SS leagues anyway).

Hopefully this is just one-year mess. If not, those ideas of eliminating the Appy League are probably gonna resurface in some form or fashion.

Here is the schedule and how it will look.  One interesting note is in addition to the back to back days off, there will also be some Day/night double headers on the schedule.

That really is an odd schedule ... A double header with a change of stadiums; wo games on the same day with two different teams; probably some other weirdness I missed.  It looks like an "interesting" year in the Appy league.

The change of stadium double header shouldn't be too tough.   It takes about 45 minutes to drive from the Astro's stadium to the JC Cards stadium.  Greeneville commutes to several sites (Bristol, JC, Elizabethton, and Kingsport) because they are less than 1 1/2 hours drive.
