What a fun team to watch.  And a terrific story.  Almost so much so that it seems rigged.  Naturally I am pulling for them to triumph in the NFC.  Amazing the turnaround that can happen in football.  It gives hope to the Texans.

Hope to the Texans? It's more salt in the wound. I can't imagine the collective gnashing of teeth if you add a Reggie Bush Superbowl appearance to this past weekend's display.

If the Saints make the Super Bowl, it'll have a whole lot more to do with the resurgence of that defense and an MVP year from Drew Brees than it will from Reggie Bush.

Obviously. Somehow, however, I doubt that will temper Howard in Memorial adding it as exhibit 5,267 regarding the Texans 2006 first round pick.

All the Texans need is competent decision-makers, and things will fall into place.  Of course competent decision-makers are a rare commodity in the NFL.

I think Payton's going to be a hell of a coach. And you can't say enough about what Brees has brought to that franchise.

I didn't like seeing my Cowboys get whipped, but kudos to the Saints on a hell of a game.

You don't think that onsides kick in the third quarter when they were already up by 18 points was bush league?

No, it wasn't bush league.

Unless Texas decided to quit playing and leave the field, the Saints have no reason to let up.

If the Cowboys had come back to win the game, you think they'd apologize after the Saints stopped being aggressive?

The Saints had momentum and were feeling it, and so they went for a knockout blow.  Good for them.

They wanted to put the game out of reach.  that move helped.  it would have been bush league if they went for a TD in the closing minutes.  Instead they took a knee near the goal-line to eat up the clock.

No.  If they'd kicked it deep do you think the return man would have just stopped if he were headed for the endzone?  You play hard and aggressive within the limits of the rules until the end of the game.

I agree with you. I think it was certainly unorthodox but nothing beyond just being aggressive and going for the jugular. Also, as someone who loves seeing Cowboys fans get their hopes up only to be dashed, it made my night.

My Cowboys-fan buddies are wailing about the Saints "running up the score" and "how can they be 'America's Team' after that BS". I was just interested in what another Cowboys fan thought about it.

I'm not quite sure which team's return man you are referring to. Obviously the Cowboys needed as many points as quickly as they could get, so why would he stop?.

And if you are referring to a Cowboys kick off, I think there's a significant difference between the Saints executing the routine kickoff return for a touchdown and a surprise onsides kick.

Also, there is a degree of etiquette involved, which is why teams just take a knee at the end of the game instead of trying to score (well beyond merely not wanting to turn the ball over). Sort of like not stealing a base when you're up by 8 runs.

But, with the instant case, there was still plenty of time left in the game for a possible Cowboys comeback (18 points can be gained in three possessions). Also, that was one beautifully executed onsides kick.

I was referring to the onside kick, and going into hypothetical land that if they had kicked it deep...  18 points up in the 3rd is not an out of reach game.  It is not bush league to try to get the ball back as quickly as possible while the game is still in doubt. Cowboy fans whining about that onside kick need to get a life.

When Brees took a knee with 3:00 minutes left the game was no longer in doubt.  There was no longer a need to be aggressive.

The Saints were nearly flawless all night.

that reminded me of the time Sam Wyche and the Bengals intentionally ran up the score against my beloved Oilers in the 89 season. The Bengals executed an onside kick  with a 45-0 lead, then late in the game called a timeout with seconds left just so they could bring on the field goal unit and crack sixty points.

Wyche then wagged his finger at Jerry Glanville and blasted the team in his post-game press conference.

"They (the Oilers) are the dumbest, most stupid, undisciplined football team we've ever played. It's hard to believe they can ever win games."

Nope. I've seen too much funny stuff happen to think that trying to build on a three-score lead is bush league.

The only thing I saw that was "bush league" was Dallas' effort. They read a little too many of their own clippings, and a good team handed them their ass.
