Passing thought...

While reading Roger's latest  ramblings,  a thought occurred to me.  If Buehrle were available, as Rogers suggests, would a deal of Burke and Lidge be enough? Too much?  Granted, he didn't have the best season but of the other mentioned candidates to leave (Contreras, Garcia or Vasquez), he seems the least likely to be traded just on performance alone.

Buehrle's making about 10 mil next year on his option IIRC. Burke and Lidge would be way too much for a year of an expensive starting pitcher coming off a bad year IMO. They would probably want at least Taveras coming back for any of their starting pitchers.

Another interesting idea is Jeremy Bonderman, who the Detroit Free Press says might be traded for a big bat.

The Link

The problem is that I don't think that the Astros have a big bat for sale.  Maybe the Tigers would be interested in Luke Scott and I would do that deal in a heartbeat, but I think that they are looking for something more significant, which the Astros don't have.

Not disagreeing that Buehrle is coming off a disappointing year, from the fan perspective (I didn't watch him enough to tell if there was a legit drop off in "stuff" or if the results just weren't there this year), but I'd hold off on evaluating what is "too much".  The FA market could get really expensive this year.

You aren't getting Bonderman for Luke Scott. I heard the Tigers were thinking more along the lines of Mark Teixeira for Bonderman.

Yes Stubby.  If you read my post, you'll see that that is exactly what I said -- too bad the Astros don't have a bat for trade.

That's an interesting scenario: Teixeira for Bonderman.  I'm not sure if Bonderman is a mediocre pitcher (4.72 lifetime ERA), or a 23 year old with many minus 4 ERAs in his future.  Either way, the Rangers should do it, imo.  They deperately need some decent young pitching to provide some balance to their club.  Even if he turns out to be mediocre, he's got a spot on their staff.

I have a feeling the Tigers are going to be pretty disappointed if they're thinking they'll get Teixeira straight up for Bonderman.

Buehrle option picked up by White Sox. 9.5 million.
