Baseball Scoring Question -- Game 4
« on: October 27, 2006, 12:46:02 am »
In the Bottom of the 7th inning in Game 4, the Cardinals scored two runs.

According to ESPN, 1 of them is earned.

Pitchers IP  H  R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
F Rodney 1.2 2 2 1 1 4 0 30-17 6.00

The Link

So the question: Why was 1 earned?

Of course, MLB rule 10.18 states, "In determining earned runs, the inning should be reconstructed without the errors (which include catcher?s interference) and passed balls, and the benefit of the doubt should always be given to the pitcher in determining which bases would have been reached by errorless play."

So after a leadoff double, a bunt happened.  Had no error occurred, then there would have been Eckstein on 3rd with 1 out.

"For the purpose of determining earned runs, an intentional base on balls, regardless of the circumstances, shall be construed in exactly the same manner as any other base on balls."

Pujols was then intentionally walked.

And then Edmonds and Rolen struck out.

The inning "would have" ended without a run scoring.

Nice hit by PW to get Eck home there.

Last night was first time to get to watch much of the World Series ununterupted, though it was only for the last couple of innings. I thought maybe everyone here had been pounding on FOX a little too much about their presentation of the game, but I was wrong. I feel like I could recognize more people in the stands than actually playing the game. It was like it physically hurt them to cut away from the crowd to show the game.

Who thought it was a good idea to have the crotch cam in front of home plate?
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

why are most outfielder misplays other than drops of easy fly balls considered hits instead of errors?

The crowd shots were supposed to be celebrity shots because this series is supposed to be in New York City. The Tigers and Cardinals really screwed that up for Fox.

Nice to see Preston Wilson come through, thought he was nothing but class during his short stint with the Astros.

If the outfielder doesn't touch the ball, it's a hit.  Scoring rule number something-something.  Otherwise, Roger Cendeno's centrefield meanderings would result in multiple errors per game for him.
Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.
