Still need three wins
« on: September 27, 2006, 10:15:05 am »
The Astros still need 3 wins to lock in a winning season. Then they can start looking at the standings.
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

I'm sorry...who gives a shit about a "winning season"?  What good does that do anyone?

I don't give a fuck if we're 50-112 or 82-80, if we didn't make the playoffs, we didn't make the playoffs.  No one will look back and say "remember that 2006 team?  They sure underachieved and didn't make the playoffs, but at least they had a winning record."

To me, it is the same thing as Garner saying the team needed to make it to .500, and then worry about the playoffs.

My mind is too simple to weigh out the matchups and schedules and possibilities, but having a winning record for the season usually gives better odds at getting to the playoffs than a losing record.

Ok, I buy that, but A doesn't necessarily equal B.  At this point, the only thing that actually matters is "will the Astros have more wins than the Reds and Cardinals?"

Garner says that stuff because he doesn't want to appear (in the press) to be looking too far ahead.  That's standard sports management.  Baby steps.

But I guarantee you the players are interested in one thing right now: winning this fucking division.

We have no reason to go worse than 4-1 the last 5 games.  If that happens, you'd have to think you'll get your wish and I'll get mine.

I am swinging violently between knowing that the Astros have beaten the ATL like a junk yard dog of late, and knowing that there's no way that ATL lose more than 2 this weekend.

Please file this away, and understand that I will be agreeing with you and disagreeing with you from moment to moment for the next 5 days.

Oh, I want to see the Astros make the playoffs. For me it starts with "Will the Astros win tonight." I live for tonight's game.

The next step is seeing if the Astros win the next 3 games and take a winning season.

At that point, I can probably wrap my mind around what it will take to make the playoffs. I just feel like I am getting ahead of myself if I am looking 5 games ahead instead of just enjoying each game as it happens. I want to know what the next pitch is going to be.

Trust me, I'm right there with you.

While this week hasn't been quite the national circus sideshow that the '04 and '05 playoff runs were, I'm pacing a hole in the floor behind my couch, thinking out every single pitch (in two games at once, no less), and barely able to concentrate on things like "work" or "sleep" or "eating."

Win tonight.  That's all that matters.  Cards face a kid who almost threw a perfect game his last start.  Padres need a win (if you can believe this) even more than the Cards.  I like the Pads chances for the sweep tonight.  Our job is two-fold; hope like hell that Hirsh has one of his "on" games instead of his "get blow'd up" games and then we need to hope that Shawn Chacon is the Astros bitch and not just a 2-time-fluke.

Last night was the gift.  That the Cards lost that game with Carpenter, I felt, was actually devastating.  You can see it.  Busch was dead quiet last night.  Dan and Al sounded like Chip and Stoney used to sound when the Cubs were losing another late season game after they had been eliminated.

But tonight.....tonight, the Cards (on paper) should lose and the Astros should (on paper) win.  Doesn't mean shit, but if it plays out.....1/2 game out with 4 to go.

Just keep winning.

I may be conditioned from those years where not finishing in the basement of the NL West was a moral victory, but I still think that a winning season is nothing to sneer at.

The entire roster.
