Booing Preston Wilson
« on: September 25, 2006, 12:30:16 pm »
Last night's game was a great finish to a wonderful weekend of baseball, but did anyone else find it totally tasteless that Preston Wilson was booed when he pinch-hit in the ninth inning?

I was thinking the same thing.  Ridiculousness.
"Ground ball right side, they're not gonna be able to turn two OR ARE THEY, THROW, IS IN TIME!!! WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN BY BRUNTLETT AND EVERETT, AND THEY CUT DOWN MABRY TO END THE GAME, AND THE ASTROS LEAD THIS NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES THREE GAMES TO ONE!!!!!"

Half those idiots probably thought he left by choice to sign with another team, like Carlos Beltran.

Fans booed Viz earlier in the week.  There is a lot of truth to the fact that a lot of Houston Astros fans are stupid.

And jackasses.

It would have to be the majority of fans there last night because it sounded real loud on the tv.  It sickens me.

I was at the Friday night game, and I heard boos for Viz as well.

How do you boo Jose Vizcaino?

There was, at least, an attempt by those in attendance who can breathe with their mouths closed, to cheer Wilson.

I was happy when Viz was taken out of the game.  It would have been just like him to have a clutch hit for the Cards.
Boom!

I was sitting by someone who started booing, and I said why are you booing Preston?  They told me they weren't booing Preston, that they were booing LaRussa for pinch-hitting for the pitcher.

I thought it was pretty disgusting.  Save the "boos" for the Puerto Rican Whore.

Even my wife commented about that.  Of course, since some "fans" now boo Lidge every time he allows a baserunner, I can't say that I'm terribly surprised.

They would've sounded less stupid saying they were booing Wilson for leaving the Astros.  At least that would've showed that they'd been paying enough attention to know that he'd once played in Houston.

Astros fans are far less belligerent in this regard than fans in most any other place, certainly any east coast city.

I dunno.  Lots of people boo LaRussa.  Just read a cards board, and they're smart.

I figured the booing of P dub was b/c he sucked as an astro and the fans were able to let him know about it now that he was wearing enemy colors.  I was at the game and did not boo, but that was how I took it/what I thought the reason for it was.

Exactly-he failed to come through time and time again & once we released him he signed with St. Louis. Therefore he deserves to hear it.

So, do you guys boo when Lane, Ensberg, Everett, Biggio, and Ausmus fail to come through this year?

Also, if you got fired and a company with a better "record" hired you, can we boo you also?

Deserves? Did he fail to come through on purpose? Was he supposed to just retire after he was released?

What a crappy way of looking at things.

Edited on mine to mean:

I wasn't saying that I thought he sucked, I was saying that was my interpretation of what the booing was about.  I did, however, agree with the decision to release him.  Once Luke Scott was made the everyday guy I didn't see a place for P dub.  I wish he wouldn't have gone to the jakes, but what are you going to do?

he was released b/c they could not get Lane past waivers. they wanted Wilson in Houston and Lane in RR.

If Lane couldn't get through waivers, and if the Astros wanted Wilson in Houston - why not let Lane get taken by another team?  Are the Astors so desparate for outfielders next year that Lane was the better man to keep this year?  (assuming we weren't going to pick up Wilson's escalating option contract)

Wilson was going to be gone at the end of the year anyway. Lane still has some years under club control. That was the difference.

Understood Jim- that's another part of why I agreed with the decision.  Lane might be salvagable in the future.  Preston had no future with the club and no obvious role for this season. I thought it was an fairly easy decision.  I know many did not agree. To each his own, Lane might never be any good, but I wouldn't have given up on him, which is what placing him on waivers would have done since he would definately have gotten claimed.
