color me shocked. I thought they'd either trade or dump Jason Lane.

Didn't see that coming.  I had no idea he was even eligible for assignment (I guess I still don't know what that means--didn't he have to pass waivers?).

Does this mean that Preston likely cleared waivers after the trade deadline?

Doubtful, unless they're very close on a trade no one knows about.  Ten days to release, trade or reassign is a lot of latitude for what's going on behind the curtain.

Ok, maybe there isn't much going on behind the curtain...

After reading that article I like Preston as a person even more (as much as you can if you know a person only by public comments).  As a baseball move I understand it, though.  Still kind of shocking that the Laniac survived.

So, a)the Astros have been disappointed in his production, no surprise, b)they weren't going to pick up his option, no surprise, and c)Lane, though he's been disappointing, has more value because he's under club control past this year.

Maybe the Astros can still deal him.

I guess they decided to keep they guy they had under control, rather than the one who was a goner at season's end anyway.

So they view Lane as more valuable long term?  Is that too simplistic?

because a left-handed pinch-hitter who rarely strikes out is more valuable than a right-handed hitter who frequently does.

Wilson's bat isn't suited for PH duty.

Eggszactly... and JR House is actually better than either Lane or Wilson for that job.  But he can't come up until September.  Lane has the job until then.

They made a run with Lane last year, they can do it again this year, regardless of what role he plays on the team. Go Astros...

He actually performed well as a late inning pinch hitter in 2004.  His first full year as a starter was in 2005.  It all depends on Lane right now if he can settle for being a pinch hitter/spot starter/late inning defensive replacement again like he was in 2004.  Some players adapt and come back strong, other fear that they will get stuck in such a role for their careers and thus pout a little and fail to improve.

I know this has been answered well already, but I got to ask: Why would you think Palmeiro?
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

I understand why they did this, but I wish it could have worked out better. I would much prefer PW to Lane, and was actually OK with the fact the Astros would get nothing in return for Jason but $50k.

OK, no one is calling my number to be a GM.

I liked Wilson, though. Good guy that I was really pulling for. I would love to see him come back at some point for a slightly better price tag than his option would have paid. OK, not my money, just thinking Drayton isn't going to pay premium for every nice guy.

Sadly, first thing I thought of....

Not that he is a racist, that there would be an article on the subject.

To play sports blogger for a second here: It is a shame Lane didn't clear waivers so that deal where he was traded straight up for Tejada couldn't go through....

With the Orioles picking up 97% of Miggi's salary...
It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of 'em was one kinda sombitch or another.

Oh, yeah.  Pinwheel's already on the phone with Skippy to my Lou Darling Bayless to figure out the best approach to doing so.  Jesus-Jesus is on hold once Pinwheel hangs up...."they'd done it before."

Amazingly, JdJO actually preemted AGAINST the "Drayton a racist" view by discussing his support of Cecil Cooper this morning.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

Cecil seems like good people, not to mention pretty sharp.  We gonna lose him in the next couple years?  I'm sure that's in the article, but you won't catch me with a Chronicle, unless you follow me to the crapper at work, which I would not recommend.  It runs (tee-hee) the potential of being Belushi as the Hulk disgusting.  "IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO SMELL LIKE ROSES!!!"

1) Because Palmeiro is under a $1.9-million, two-year contract. Wilson would be gone (albeit with a $500,000 buyout) after this season unless the Astros picked up a 3-year, $24-million option.

2) Palmeiro's role (left-handed pinch-hitter) is different from Wilson's (starting left fielder).

Yes, that is too simplistic. They are in totally different contractual situations.

Hopefully Lane is bright enough to figure out that now would be the worst time for him to pout and that he should thank his lucky stars that he dodged a bullet.
