Tampa Bay Team May Drop Name to Spur Attendance
The Link

"New owner and former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Managing Director Stuart Sternberg may change the team's name this month, spokesman Rick Vaughn said. That would make it the first baseball club to swap monikers without leaving town in 41 years. When the Houston Colt .45s became the Astros and moved to the bigger Astrodome, attendance more than doubled in the next two years."

It was the name, not the mosquitos the size of B-52s what kept the baseball fans away.   Also, they've discovered the problem with the teams' record,

``The Devil Rays are a name associated with losing, and a new name gives them a fresh start,'' said Britt Beemer, Orlando, Florida-based chairman of America's Research Group, a marketing research company that works for professional baseball and hockey teams. ``A new name can give them a chance to create a new image.''

"marketing research company"... A couple more pitchers to go with Kazmir might be more effective, but, go with what you know. Thanks Gerry.

...but if it works, will George be changing the name to get the players-formally-known-as-Yankees back to the series?

Everybody I know refers to them as "Tampa Bay" or "Tampa" (not "Devil Rays") anyway.  What are they going to do about that?  Pretend they're from Las Vegas?

But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

Wow.  I wondered where Wild Thing ended up.  If I'd had to bet, probably would've gone for federal pen.  Devil Rays' front office is pretty close, though.

The name 'Tampa Bay' is stupid, to me.  One should be required to name a sports team (outside of water polo, I guess) after some place that sits on terra firma.  Even the Packers are named after a city named after some body of polluted water. Should call them 'St. Pete' or 'Tampa', 'Disney World', 'W. Florida'.  Maybe some fans stay away because they think they'll have to go in the water?

Devil Rays, Schmevil Rays -- I was way ahead of this curve.  But actually, I tend to think of the as the Crawfords, like the old Pittsburgh Negro League team.
