Anyone listening to the Pirates broadcast?
« on: April 23, 2006, 03:43:59 pm »
In the 2nd inning today, with Everett on first, Oswalt pulled out of his bunt attempt and swang away. He ended up grounding into a double play. The play-by-play guy says that a pitcher should never, *ever* pull out of a bunt attempt in a bunt situation. No matter what.

Yet, just yesterday, they scolded Buccholz for bunting with men on 1st and 2nd. They replayed over and over again how the SS had wheeled over to third and the 2B had wheeled over to first, leaving the middle infield wide open for a squibbler.  "Why not pull out of the bunt and swing away" they said. Buccholz's bunt ended with a force out at third.

In both cases, the play failed, so obviously in the commentator's mind, they pitcher should've made the other decision.

Seemingly, the Pirates' PBP biys are of the same quality as the playing staff.

since theres no GZ thread started,

apparently no matter where Rick Reed is on the field, he's still a big steaming pile of turd.
Here are just a few of the key ingredients: dynamite, pole vaulting, laughing gas, choppers - can you see how incredible this is going to be?

Yep, heard both games and feel the same.  That said, gonna dig a little further here.  Are there different tendencies as a manager when faced with a hitter's/pitcher's count in this situation?  By this I mean, might you be more likely to have the "wheel play" on in the field early in the count and more likely to take it off as they did today when the pitcher falls behind (today was 2-0 IIRC) with the feeling that there's more of a chance that the opposing manager might give the pitcher the green light to swing away?

Not sure what the count was in yesterday's game when they grilled Bucholtz for bunting.
