Rosenthal: Bagwell's days numbered
« on: March 22, 2006, 10:13:06 am »
ITA with  this assessment.

With Baggy having to come out after two innings again last night, I can't see how he'll believe that he can be an everyday 1b.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, torture of Bud Selig.

I'm not so interested in Rosenthal's comments as Bagwell's:
Quote:

Asked if his exit in the middle of the third inning of Tuesday's game was a story or a note, Jeff Bagwell chose the latter.

"There will be a story if next week, after the off-day (on March 20), that I'm playing two innings and getting out of the game," he said. "There's a story. Right now, it's just a note. Jeff Bagwell has his normal soreness, and he's trying not to push it anymore."

I don't know how plugged in he is, or what other things might be going on.  But just as an outside observer.  Bagwell's inability to complete more of these games is not a good sign in my book as to his ability to play this season, even as much as I would like him to succeed.

I am not expecting 9 innings, but he never seems to last much more then even 3.  And this is about the time that teams start sending more and more guys to the minor camp to allow the regulars more time in games.

Not looking good for Bagwell unless he forces the team by saying he can play... and even then it will probably end badly for both parties.  I sure hope he starts to show more than he has, for both their sakes.

Excellent point... it does lead me to disagree with Rosenthal's belief that Bagwell will force the team's hand.  I think he's starting to realize that it may be over.

That's uncanny.
Another trenchant comment by a jealous lesser intellect.

I was thinking the same thing.  It sounds like he knows it's not getting better, or at least to a manageable state, but isn't ready to admit it yet.

Ideally we can hope for one of two outcomes:

1) Bagwell's shoulder improves and he can play 1B as a regular (both hitting and throwing)
2) Bagwell admits he can go and bows out gracefully

Given the recent evidence we seem to be looking for #2 more and more... But even with the best of people you just never know.

I think giving up something you have done and loved for so long is very hard.  And it will be for Bagwell too.  Even if it is the best thing for him to do.

I'm personally hoping Bags makes a successful return, but on the chance that he doesn't and decides to hang them up this week...stand pat, or see how serious Pittsburgh is at trading Wilson.  Hate to keep Willy T down, but that just seems too tempting.
