HOF discussion
« on: March 01, 2006, 08:54:48 pm »
Ok, I know that I'm asking for a lot here, considering the fact that we (as Astros fans) will be lucky just to get one more season out of Bagwell, let alone two, but for discussion sake I'm throwing it out there.

How frick'n cool would it be for Bags to gut it out for two more seasons and retire in unison with Biggio after the 2007 season?...and as a result, giving the pair the chance to get voted into the HOF together?

Again, I know the chances are slim that Bags can make that happen, but let's assume he does?  How would the voting work in the first and subsequent years?  Would one, both or none be voted in?  I'm pretty sure there's a pretty good chance that both might get voted in.  If both were to play, then you'd have to assume that they would both be relatively productive.  And by productive I mean good enough to play in the lion's share of the games this year and slightly better than half in '07.  If that happend then that would be good enough for Bidge to reach 3,000 hits and Bags to quite possibly hit 500 homers.  Which brings me to my next question:   Have to teammates ever been voted into the HOF in the same year?

I think that it is an interesting hypothetical question.  If for whatever reason they both retire the same year, thus becoming elgible at the same time, would there be any effort on the part of the voters to have them elected in the same class?  My guess is no, but that would be damn cool.  Of course this also carries the assumption that one or both would be elected in their first year elgible, which is not necessarily a lock.

I just hope both are honored there, regardless of when.  It's really like saying how cool it would be to wrap up a World Series win at home as opposed to winning it at the other teams stadium.

Absolutely, I didn't mean to come off as greedy.  For whatever reason it hit me that it was a possibility (however remote) and I wondered if it had ever happened before.

Just since 1990:

Kirby Puckett and Dave Winfield, teammates 1993-1994, inducted 2001.

Carlton Fisk and Tony Perez, teammates 1980, inducted 2000.

George Brett and Orlando Cepeda, teammates 1974, inducted 1999.

Gaylord Perry and Ferguson Jenkins, teammates 1975, 1980, inducted 1991.

None of these really count in the same way Bagwell and Biggio would, though.

Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle were both inducted in 1974.  Lefty Grove and Mickey Cochrane were both inducted in 1947.  Those are both examples of teammates who were key members of teams that were great over a period of years.

You can probably find other examples back when the Veterans Committee used to induct boatloads of old teammates of the committee members.

Thanks Arky...I had a feel'n that you might come through with an answer for me.  I thought about Bench and Morgan but that was incorrect, then actually thought about Mantle and maybe Ford, but didn't look it up.  If figured there had to of been a couple classes where at least two Yankees were voted in at the same time, but maybe that was it.  In any case, thanks for the effort.

When I was young, many moons ago, I received a gift that I still have, the Baseball Encyclopedia. I became fascinated with the entries of players who stayed with one team their entire careers. Ford and Mantle are great examples of this, teammates for 17 years, 15 World Series victory rings combined, and voted into the HOF the same year. No other pair even comes close.

Biggio and Bagwell are longtime teammates with the same club, and certainly HOF worthy. It would be great to see them inducted together.
