How much for Ensberg?
« on: January 11, 2006, 03:06:24 pm »
i]speculation in an article about the WhiteSox 3b

As a first-year arbitration-eligible player, Crede could get a raise of at least $2 million. Blue Jays third baseman Shea Hillenbrand, for instance, had his salary leap from $407,500 to $2.6 million before the 2004 season with Arizona.

Astros third baseman Morgan Ensberg, a first-year arbitration-eligible player who hit 36 homers and drove in 101 runs in 2005, is likely to get a bigger raise than Crede. Ensberg earned $450,000 in base salary.

Sure they can. I don't know if they have or not, though. Their desire to do so probably has to do with how much of a risk they think injury is and how valuable Ensberg is. As much as I like Ensberg, I doubt he's reached "must insure" status, even if it is a high risk.

'Til the offers are made, who knows. I'm of the opinion that if the Astros attempt to lowball anything less than $2.25 million for Lidge or Ensberg, they'll lose to any reasonable ($3.5 to $5 million) counter offer from their respective agents.

It's Beck from his  Ghettochip Malfunction ("Hell Yes" Remix) music video. I think I'll probably change it soon, though.

Third baseman Joe Crede and the Chicago White Sox agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract worth $2,675,000 and avoided salary arbitration.

Ron Allen, channel 11, says Ensberg proposed 4.2, Astros offered 3.4.

I wouldn't be at all suprised to see this get handled before the arbitration. For something between 3.8 and 4.

Considering the Astros haven't actually gone to arbitration with anyone since Darryl Kile, you'd be pretty safe in that bet.

Has the deadline passed yet?

Does that mean they are going into arbitration?

The deadline to reach a deal is anytime before the arbitration panel actually announces a decision.  The hearing probably won't be scheduled until mid-February. So they got plenty of time to work out a deal.

It will be interesting to see what happens.  I wonder if the delay is due to an attempt to work out a long-term deal in the 2-3 yr range?  Won't know until they announce something but Ensberg would seem to be in line for more than a single year deal, if not now then after the 2006 season.

First, I wouldn't say there's necessarily a "delay".  They just exchanged figures a few days ago.  They got probably at least another month to get something worked out.  As for a multiple year deal, Ensberg may not want anything more than a 1-year deal, as it would basically take away some or all of his remaining arbitration years, which would figure to be his best.  On the other hand, he's likely to be on the downside of his career before he's a free agent, as that won't happen until 2009 when he's nearly 34 years old, so he may want to lock something up now.  I don't know, but I wouldn't assume that just because it's a 1-year deal that it's because the Astros won't give more than that.

Richard Hidalgo might be the biggest reason MoBerg wouldn't get multi-year.
