Lefthander Carlos Hernandez, the former phenom who has struggled to return to form following shoulder surgery, became a minor-league free agent when the Astros took him off their 40-man roster Friday.
Hernandez went 5-8 with a 5.56 ERA this year for Class AAA Round Rock but never regained the velocity he had early in his career. The Astros are clearing roster spots to add players before the deadline for the Rule 5 draft.
Astros general manager Tim Purpura said the club could still re-sign Hernandez to a minor-league deal.
"We communicated with his agent that we'd like to have him back," Purpura said. "Whether he decides to do that or not is another story."
